What the gurus are saying

This lotion layers beautifully under heavier moisturizers and works across most skin types without triggering sensitivity or acne. Gurus praise its simplicity, affordability at around $15 for 140 milliliters, and how well it plays with acne-prone and sensitive skin alike. Apply it to damp skin for best results, then follow with a richer cream or serum to seal in hydration.

"Initially it looks very shiny but once it soaks in it feels really nice on the skin and it's not as shiny. It [...] tends to work best if I apply this onto damp skin and follow with a hydrating serum or good thick moisturizer over it. The really nice thing for this one is it plays well with most skin types including sensitive, acne prone, dry and oily skin types. It's very friendly to everything and there's no real ingredients of note for acne prone skin, so that is pretty wonderful because sometimes it's hard to find products that are very friendly to acne prone skin. At 140 milliliters retailing for about 15 dollars, it's a pretty affordable product, especially the fact that 140 milliliters of a lotion texture will last quite some time. [...] It's very simple and will work well for most skin types, which makes it really wonderful. [...] It's not a must-have, but it's really nice and I really like it and a lot of their products. They're very simple but well formulated."

"I absolutely love it, it's from Hada Labo but it's from their Gokujyun Aging Care Firming Lotion that red line, and this moisturizer retails for $6.74 and it's this ultra rich balm. This is pretty thick so if you have oily skin you may not enjoy the texture as much. It is fragrance-free, void of alcohols. It contains fatty acids, lipids, three different types of hyaluronic acid along with niacinamide that just works really well together to provide skin brightening, improving skin texture and skin tone."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
