  • Stiff texture that doesn't melt easily

What the gurus are saying

One guru found this balm strikes an appealing balance between hydration and shine, with a formula that goes a long way since only a tiny amount is needed and stays put without feeling sticky or requiring constant reapplication. However, another expert felt the texture was too stiff and sticky, sitting on top of the lips rather than sinking in with the deep moisturization they were looking for. The split reflects different preferences for how a balm should feel and perform.

"They've also got this Plum Plump Hyaluronic Gloss Balm and this is only $22. It's a little bit more translucent but it's also a little bit more sticky and this actually hydrates better in my opinion. When I put this on at night and I wake up in the morning my lips actually feel hydrated. It smells divine and it's light, it's not overbearing. This is clear, it's a little bit more sticky but this works so well and it actually keeps the lips hydrated. It has hyaluronic acid in here which is phenomenal for the lips. Hyaluronic acid doesn't suck moisture from the inside of your lips out; instead of hyaluronic acid being like a magnet it's more like velcro, it kind of creates a film and kind of locks things into the lips. This has plum so you got the vitamin C, this has hyaluronic acid, this has humectant. This is so much better for the lips and it's $22 instead of $24. The fact that this is cruelty-free made by two bad entrepreneurial women, actually has ingredients that are really fantastic for the lips and feels better for me, I would say that this is a better choice than Lage for the price."

"The Glow Recipe Hyaluronic Plump lip mask, I've got to admit I do like this one. I got it in PR, it has a really nice feel to it, it's got that occlusive feel that I like, and it has a pleasant flavor to it too, which is an important characteristic in the lip balms I use."

Don't Waste Your Money - Best And Worst Skincare I've tried Recently
"This reads as everything I like in a lip balm. First of all, it has that creamy texture where if you want a glossy lip, you can just add a little bit more than you normally would and it will comfortably sit on your lips and look glossier. If you don't like a glossy lip but you really want that hydration and healthy-looking lips, you just pat it on like a normal lip balm. It does a really good job at getting that balance of giving your lips a really hydrated, smooth feel where they almost feel like really nicely plumped up, but also locking everything in like a normal lip balm. We have hyaluronic acid and raspberry extract in here to help hydrate the skin, and kakadu plum, which is where the plum plump comes from, which is an antioxidant. It's $22, and at first I was like, oh, is that pricey? [...] You get 15 milliliters, which is half your average serum size. I've had this for two weeks now and I've barely even scratched the surface. [...] You need a tiniest amount of this and it's going to last you the longest time. [...] I'll easily stretch this to a year, absolutely no problem whatsoever."

"It does give you a very instant hydrated and glossy look on the lips without being sticky and suffocating, whilst also giving your lips an actually really good dose of hydration."

"I'm gonna finish on Glow Recipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Gloss Balm. This is nice and not too thick but you can definitely make it thicker for a more occlusive kind of like lip mask in the evening but during the day you could do a nice thin layer and it's still kind of like keeps your lips nice and soft."

"I don't like the texture of this balm. It's very stiff, it doesn't really melt, it doesn't become balmy. It's very stiff, it's kind of sticky, and I don't find it to be very moisturizing. It really just kind of sits in like this kind of sticky thick layer at the top of your lips, but it doesn't really moisturize or hydrate or really honestly plump. This isn't plump deep within the skin at all, and that's really what my skin wants. I want deep down replenishment, deep down moisturization. [...] This just really doesn't do that."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
