What the gurus are saying

This cleanser splits reviewers sharply on how gentle it truly is. Some found it cleanses well without stripping and work well for double cleansing, while others describe it as drying compared to newer formulas and note it stings noticeably around the eyes, especially when removing makeup and sunscreen. It performs best for oily or sweaty skin in warmer months, though the texture may feel dated to some, and quality control issues with mold have been reported by at least one reviewer.

"This cleanser is gentle but it does its job of cleansing the skin without stripping it. [...] I like that with this cleanser you could also double cleanse with it, so you can use it twice when you're wearing makeup [...] to remove your makeup and then use it again to make sure you got all the nooks and crannies."

"Glow Recipe focuses on fruit-based formulas combined with gentle but powerful active ingredients, and they wanted to create products that are not only effective but also offer a sensorial experience that make skincare fun and like a pampering experience for all their customers. And that's why I love the brand so much because I want my products to be effective, but that doesn't mean they can't be a joy to use."

"This feels slightly drying in comparison to the Avocado cleanser. It's not drying. Like you could use this with oily skin you'll be absolutely fine. They say it's an effective yet gentle 3-in-1 bouncy makeup eraser, cleanser and deep clarifying mask with Blueberry Extract which is an antioxidant that can help calm inflammation, Hyaluronic Acid and AHAs as well as a gentle exfoliant. My skin loves this in Summer when I am excessively oily and sweaty. And it does make a nice mask, you just leave it on, rinse away and your skin feels untouched. However, as a daily cleanser, in comparison, I don't think I would use this anymore. The Blueberry Bounce Cleanser isn't an old fashioned cleanser but in comparison to the Avocado one it feels like a bit dated. But it's definitely one I'll keep hanging around for when I am excessively oily or when I'm sweaty in Summer."

"The Glow Recipe Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser doesn't feel as gentle as the newer avocado cleanser or a lot of cleansers nowadays. This cleanser feels a little bit stripping, I don't like the texture of it, and if it gets in your eye it stings so bad, [...] especially if you want to remove sunscreen and makeup from around the eye area."

"Worst is hard because I love Glow Recipe, but for me it has to be their blueberry bounce cleanser. It is gentle, but used on the wrong skin type or even at the wrong time of year for your skin, this can be extremely drying, and if it gets in your eye it hurts, it really really hurts."

"This is the Glow Recipe cleanser. A lot of people had problems with this when it first released, the opening is too large for the packaging so it's impossible to squeeze without making a mess. The problem showed up immediately and I thought about returning it, but I never did, so it's just sat unused since."

"The Glow Recipe Blueberry Bounce Cleanser was another one I heard a lot about with mold in it and people took photos of it and then emailed them and got another one returned."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
