What they liked

  • Creamy texture that cleanses gently
  • Hydrating without stripping skin
  • Works as single or double cleanse

What they flagged

  • Dispenser hole too large, product leaks
  • May leave hydrating residue on oily skin

What the gurus are saying

This cleanser transforms from a creamy lotion to a gentle foam, leaving skin feeling hydrated rather than stripped, which gurus praise as a significant step forward for the brand. Ceramides, prebiotics, postbiotics, and colloidal oatmeal work together to soothe and support the moisture barrier, making it especially suited to dry, eczema-prone, or sensitized skin. However, the hydrating residue it leaves can feel uncomfortable for those with oily skin or anyone bothered by a lingering cream cleanser sensation, and the fragrance means those with rosacea-prone or fragrance-sensitive skin may want to patch-test first.

"It is refreshing. I can't lie. But you are going to smell like a vegetable market at the end of this and that is something that you should be aware of. I've just washed it off and my skin feels really tight. That's not how your skin should ever feel after you've washed it. You need far more glycerin. The positives are it has got glycerin in it. It's just not as much as I'd like. It's got ceramides in it, but I would say not enough. My skin is not enjoying it. And then it's got oats in it, which is anti-inflammatory. The negatives of this are the fragrance. Fragrance plus it costs £26 for 150 mils."

"The positives are it has got glycerin in it. It's just not as much as I'd like. Inion which means that this will help with the good bacteria on the skin which is good. It's got ceramides in it but I would say not enough. My skin is not enjoying it. And then it's got oats in it which is anti-inflammatory which okay fair enough. I can actually feel the cooling effect on the skin. The negatives of this are the fragrance fragrance. Plus it cost £26 for 150 mls."

"Another Glow Recipe cleanser that I like is the Avocado cleanser. That one is more of a cream cleanser, and it's typically something I couldn't use until it's dead winter, but if you have dry skin, that's also one to look at. It has such a nice creamy texture and it's gentle. I wouldn't use it to double cleanse because the texture doesn't feel right. It depends on how much makeup you're wearing. If you're wearing just light makeup, maybe you could double cleanse with it, but the kind of makeup I wear, I wouldn't."

"This is the Avocado Ceramide Moisture Barrier Cleanser, and I really regret that I did not return it. When this product released it had a huge design flaw, it just pours out everywhere, gunky all over the packaging. As a cleanser itself I think it's nice, but in faulty packaging. They say the packaging is improved now, but I bought it when it released, and it was such an insult to your biggest fans to release a first batch with a design flaw like that. It's a lot of why I ended up falling behind with this brand."

"The Glow Recipe Avocado Cleanser had a hole that was too big, so the product came flying out and it was so wasteful. I was such a big fan of Glow Recipe that I bought it the second it released, and I discovered the problem myself. They eventually fixed the packaging, but they never sent out any kind of fix for those of us who had already bought the product with the bad packaging."

"This is one of my favorite products from them. There's just something about this cleanser like it is so [...] elegant. It makes my skin feel so good after I use it. It is kind of this milky lotion to foam that gently cleanses your skin like feels more hydrated and refreshed afterwards in a really good way. It has ceramides in there, pre and postbiotics to help support your skin barrier. It does a gentle cleanse but at the same time imparts this hydration on your skin so your skin does not feel stripped. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a gentle cleanser to use in the morning or as the second step of your double cleansing. For anyone that has dry and eczema prone skin, highly recommend checking this cleanser out."

"It's very hydrating and fairly effective at removing debris and simple makeup. I find it to be really nice to use in the winter time or for those with dry skin. It does contain fragrance, so if you are sensitive to fragrance or have rosacea-prone skin I would just recommend testing this out. Overall when I use this I feel like my skin feels hydrated but not stripped. Ingredient-wise it contains ceramides, pre and postbiotic ingredients along with colloidal oatmeal, all great ingredients that are soothing, nourishing and supportive of our skin moisture barrier. The addition of avocado oil really helps to nourish our skin barrier and adds hydration back that is often removed with cleansing."

10 Tips to Switch Up your Skincare Routine: Summer to Fall
"This is really nice. It has a yummy smelling, [...] nice scent. It's a creamy cleanser that contains avocado extract, ceramides, and colloidal oats, all wonderful soothing, nourishing ingredients. I really love the texture of this cleanser. [...] It's very creamy and it makes your skin feel very hydrated. If you're an individual who does not like having the sensation of a little bit of a hydrating residue that cream cleansers can impart on skin, [...] this does give you some of that sensation. But I think it's not that you're leaving residue and it's not washing off, it's more just the hydrating nature of this cleanser. I love it because it's very gentle, and for those with dry skin it is very hydrating. But if you have more oily skin or just hate that sensation of having a residual feeling of a cleanser left on your skin, then this one may not be as ideal for you."

"This by far has to be my favorite just generic cleanser of this year. I've used this so often predominantly in the morning. I just really love the formula, the scent as well as the way my skin feels while I'm cleansing and especially after. Ingredient wise it contains a blend of pre and postbiotics to help support skin barrier along with colloidal oats and avocado oil, all great nourishing ingredients. It's a non-foaming cleanser that is creamy and I love using it in the morning especially. It creates this gentle cleanse that is just what my skin needed to remove everything I put on the night before, and then afterwards I had this kind of nice slip to my skin that just felt hydrated, not tight or dry. And that is exactly why I recommend this cleanser so often. It's a great gentle cleanser all around and definitely suitable if you don't wear makeup or if you're pretty minimalist when it comes to what you put on your skin after your basic routine."

"This is a hydrating, skin barrier strengthening cleanser packed with Ceramides and pre and postbiotics to balance the skin's moisture barrier while effectively removing makeup. This is the type of cleanser I've been waiting for from Glow Recipe for a long time. This is far superior. This gives a really nice gentle, effective cleanse without the slightly drying cleanse that their other cleanser gives. This is great for all skin types. Oily skin is going to love it because it's not overly stripping of your oils. Dry skin is going to love it because it's nicely hydrating and moisturizing and repairing and we have Colloidal Oatmeal in here for soothing your skin. The tiniest bit of this, pea size amount really just lathers over the face really nicely, really gently and it really does work well as a double cleanse. I would use this on top of sunscreen, just like on a dry face, massage it in then kind of lather it up and then rinse away and it gets rid of everything absolutely fine. I don't feel the need to double cleanse sometimes with this one."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
