What the gurus are saying

The balm's stellar ingredient lineup for deep hydration wins consistent praise, with gurus highlighting the presence of hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol, and allantoin as genuinely beneficial for thirsty skin. The texture is thick and gentle, though one reviewer notes it functions much like a colored, flavored Vaseline, which works well for some but may feel heavy or redundant for others who prefer lighter options. Best suited to those after rich, occlusive moisture in a simple, unpretentious formula.

The Fall Of The Ultimate ‘Girl Boss’ Beauty Brand - Glossier - Behind The Beauty
"Glossier launched in October 2014 with four products including Balm Dotcom salve, and [...] their products were a success. This launched at a time when people were wanting that no makeup, makeup look, and Glossier was the epitome of this trend. [...] With their [...] mission to democratize beauty and create products that enhance natural beauty, they were at the forefront of makeup minimalism."

"Glossier's Balm Dotcom is essentially a nice flavored, colored Vaseline, which I do not hate. I used to use it regularly but not so much anymore, so it lands around fifth."

"This glossier balm, it's wild, it's thick, it looks like wall putty, like if you've ever plastered your walls or patched your walls, it's so thick, but it was so gentle. I probably used it for a solid month."

"This might be my favorite lip balm of all time, it is the Glossier Balm Dotcom. I'm not really a Glossier fan, I don't use any of their other products, and from a formulation perspective the Balm Dotcom is basically just glorified Chapstick, but it's not because this works better than any other lip balm I have ever used. It is so so good. I literally have it right here, it lasts for a long time, and while it doesn't necessarily leave your lips looking glowy and plump, I only have to apply this like three times a day, maybe I don't have to apply it very much. It works so well. This is the unscented one, but I'll be honest with you guys, the mango one is my favorite because that smell, it's so good. But I'm absolutely obsessed with this one. I recommend it in my videos all the time. It's just such a good product."

"That product I still love to this day. [...] It has you know beneficial skincare ingredients though. It also has like betaine, allantoin, glycerin, panthenol. So definitely really good ingredients for deeply hydrating the skin. Hyaluronic acid. I mean this has a really stellar ingredient list."
The BEST Moisturizers of 2023
"I have talked about this for a while, it doesn't even necessarily have any incredible ingredients, it just works. I don't care about extracts and oils and all this stuff, I just need something that works because with every other formula I find myself having to reuse it like 10 to 20 times a day. It is the Glossier Balm Dotcom Lip Balm. Something about this formula, it just works really well and this is one of the very few lip balms that I only need to apply like maybe two to three times a day and I'm set. It's a simple formula, it's nothing fancy. It is $14 but let me tell you it lasts a freaking long time because you only need to use a very very very small amount and it gives you the results. It just works."

TikTok Viral Products *NOT* Worth the Hype
"I would recommend the Glossier Balm Dotcom, that is like one of the only lip products that I can always count on to leave my lips feeling moist, plump, and I only have to apply like a few times a day."
Are These TikTok Products Worth the Hype? Smash or Pass!
"Glossier Balm Dotcom, yes, smash. Honestly I shouldn't smash it, I shouldn't have a love affair with that product, because truthfully the formula is so affordable that you really shouldn't be paying the price. But for some reason, every time I use that balm, it works so much better than other lip balms I've tried, so whether it's the unscented one or the mango one, probably the only product I'd smash from Glossier."
Reacting to My OLD Sephora Purchases
"My top recommendation right now is the Glossier Balm Dotcom, that one just continues to be the best lip product I've ever used."
The BEST Moisturizers of 2021!
"I remember when I was first reviewing Glossier I was really impressed with this formula, however I did feel it was a little bit overpriced because the ingredients themselves are really simple. But once I started reintroducing this into my routine, I was like, gosh dang it, this formula is so good, even though it has the same ingredients as so many other lip moisturizers you can find at the drugstore for a much lower price point. I think it just shows that formulation really matters, you can have all the right ingredients but the formulation is what counts. This one I only have to apply on my lips two, maybe three times a day. There's a reason why this one is so popular, it's really that good."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
