What the gurus are saying

Taste and smell split these reviewers sharply. Some loved the limited-edition coconut version's flavor and aroma so much it became their favorite lip oil, though they note the formula itself is a solid hydrating balm rather than revolutionary. Others found the oil developed an unpleasant cooking-oil taste after storage, which is a real concern if you plan to keep it on hand. The formula works as a nice lip balm, but whether you'll enjoy it depends heavily on how the scent and taste land for you and whether yours stays fresh.

"New shades and flavours of the Honey Infused Hydrating Lip Oil. Lip oil powered by bee garden oil to intensely hydrate lips and lock in moisture with a high shine and non sticky finish. I'm never gonna buy one of these again. I used mine that I opened once, used it and put it away. When I went to use it the other day, it tasted like cooking oil. It's within the expiry date that they give. It tasted like, oh, I'm frying something up. It was disgusting. The shades, however, are beautiful. And in that formula, these are going to look really nice. But one thing I'm not going to do is buy a product that before I even get the chance to use the whole thing, it's gonna go off and taste funny. This was in the timeline of this product meant to be going out a date. And even if I had used this every day from the point I bought it to the point I tried it and it tasted horrible, the whole thing wouldn't have been used up. It's kept in a cool, dark place, tight with the lid on. Disgusting. Because I like the shades and I like the formula. But when it goes bad, it's bad."

"I bought the Gisou Honey Infused Lip Oil because of all the terrible reviews it was getting, I just had to know. I love this, I absolutely love it, it's my favorite so far at least. This is the limited edition coconut, and it tastes and smells so good that it's playing tricks in my mind, it's not necessarily that the formula is that much better, it's just that it perfectly matched my preferences in taste and smell. Otherwise it is a nice lip balm. I thought it was a little expensive when I bought it from Sephora, but I was able to stack points, so I got a lot of points back for buying this."

"The new viral lip oils, which, side note, is the best lip oil ever."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
