What the gurus are saying

Gurus consistently call tretinoin the gold standard in anti-aging and the most potent retinoid, with decades of clinical backing and proven results for fine lines, collagen stimulation, and skin clarity. The trade-off is real: irritation and flaking are near-universal early side effects, but patience and consistent long-term use pay off in dramatically improved complexion and tone. Key caveat: individual tolerance varies widely, and it requires a prescription and dermatologist oversight.

"Tretinoin is one of the most studied ingredients in all of dermatology with decades of clinical data behind it. It's FDA approved for acne, but we also use it for anti-aging because it works at the cellular level. Tretinoin essentially does three main things for anti-aging. Number one, tretinoin speeds up skin cell turnover. Tretinoin tells your skin cells to turn over faster. So instead of dead, dull skin cells sitting on the surface, it helps your skin renew itself. This ultimately helps you with clogged pores, acne, and dullness."

"Great for signs of aging, great to firm up the skin, help stimulate new collagen. This ingredient is absolutely wonderful and I've been on it for 6 years. It's been quite the journey and I have loved every minute of it. Of course, not so much the irritation and the flakiness that comes along with tretinoin, but my complexion, the tone, and just the texture of my skin has improved so much over the 6 years. I really do recommend it. It is something that you would want to be on long term. Consistency is key. Take your time, you will get there eventually, but it is wonderful for so many skin concerns."

"if you're not pregnant do tretinoin, which is something I prescribe, that's the king of all anti-aging skincare. It helps with fine lines and wrinkles, helps clean out your pores, helps with hyperpigmentation by lightening it, it's increasing cell turnover. If that's too harsh this winter you might want to consider something over the counter like retinol."

"If you can tolerate retinol, then you're ready for tretinoin. Tretinoin is the retinoic acid that you get in Generic Tretinoin, and Generic Tretinoin costs less than ₹200. I've never really recommended this particular product because it is so expensive, and I like to make sure that on my channel there are many affordable options too. But if you can't get tretinoin where you live, whatever be the reason, you can opt for retinol."

"Tretinoin is the most potent of the retinoids because it is retinoic acid, which is what our skin needs in order to deliver all the wonderful benefits. All the other products need to go through conversions in the skin to get to that retinoic acid to deliver these benefits, so they can lose some potency along the way. Often people will say tretinoin is like the gold standard in anti-aging, and this definitely has been the experience for a lot of people out there. If you're looking to move away from retinol and take it up a notch, it's definitely worth exploring. For me, I've tried tretinoin over the years in consultation with my dermatologist and my skin just never really got on with it. But lots of people get great results, and it's always worth remembering not every ingredient is going to work the same for every single person."
