What the gurus are saying

Gurus advise against tea tree oil for facial use, citing significant irritation risk and limited efficacy. The core concerns are potent contact dermatitis, even at modest concentrations, and weak antimicrobial performance compared to simpler alternatives like diluted soap and water. Resistance development is also flagged as a systemic issue with overuse.

"I don't recommend putting tea tree oil on the skin. The antimicrobials are not very good. Your cuts and scrapes will heal just as well if not better just washing them out with a little dilute soapy water and putting plain petroleum jelly. There's a higher risk of contact dermatitis using these and they also contribute to the emergence of resistant microorganisms."

"When I first got into skincare my ex recommended that I use tea tree oil on my face to get rid of some breakouts I had. I went out and bought a bottle and used about two or three full droppers to my entire face. Within five minutes my skin was on fire. I could not use any products on my face afterwards because it was so red and burning and stinging. It was not a fun experience."
