What the gurus are saying

Gurus agree red light therapy has merit for anti-aging and skin texture, backed by research on collagen and elastin. The key caution: near-infrared settings carry real risk for those prone to hyperpigmentation or melasma, with reviewers reporting worsened pigmentation from infrared use. Red light alone is considered safer. Test carefully on your skin type before committing to regular use.

"Red light is great for anti-aging, however I would be very cautious with a device that has red light and near infrared light on it. I do not recommend using the infrared light setting on your face. The infrared light, especially if you're prone to hyperpigmentation or melasma, it leaves a little bit of an opening there for that. You might get more hyperpigmentation using the infrared light. I'm comfortable using red light on my face. I'm not comfortable using infrared light on my face because my experience when I have tried the infrared light setting, my hyperpigmentation gets worse. When I just use the red light setting, it doesn't. However, there's some people who may be prone to hyperpigmentation from either one, so use with caution. Pay attention to your skin after a couple sessions. If you notice things changing for the worse, stop using it and be very, very cautious."

"Red light therapy is good overall for complexion. Red light is really good because the idea behind it is that it gives energy to your mitochondria so the mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells, they create energy in the form of ATP, and if you use red light therapy the idea is that the energy from that red light can be infused into your cells powering your mitochondria. There are studies to show that if you do red light therapy that it can help improve the collagen of your skin, it can improve the elastin of your skin, and the wrinkles of your skin as well."
