What the gurus are saying

Dermatologists consistently recommend benzoyl peroxide cleansers as an effective first-line treatment for acne, particularly on the back and body. Both emphasize the importance of leaving it on skin for a minute or two before rinsing thoroughly to prevent bleaching towels and clothing. A key note: higher concentrations (10%) are more potent, while lower strengths (4%) work well even for sensitive skin.

"A benzoyl peroxide cleanser is going to be ideal in helping to kill the acne-causing bacteria while helping to unclog the pores, so it's going to help not only with an active breakout but it's also going to help minimize further breakouts down the road. I love to keep this in the shower because it's going to bleach your towels, so it is a good idea to use this in the shower to ensure that you're going to wash it all off before you come out so you don't get any unwanted bleach spots on your towel or even your clothing."

"When treating back acne, you want a retinoid, you want benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid. In the shower I would recommend starting with simple things, get a cleanser with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. I prefer benzoyl peroxide despite the recent studies of it maybe containing benzene, it still works, it's very effective and it releases very small amounts of benzene so I find it safe and I have continued to use it myself in the shower. You can get either 4 or 10% benzoyl peroxide, it comes in different ranges, higher percentages will work a little bit better on the back. With benzoyl peroxide cleanser it's important that when you apply you leave it on a couple of minutes before rinsing off. Second important thing with benzoyl peroxide cleanser, when you're rinsing it off you rinse it really well and if you don't it will bleach out your towels or whatever you step on when you get out of the shower. My favorite brand here is Curology, it is very gentle. I personally use their 4% acne foaming cleanser, love it, even for the most sensitive skin. I use it on my face, I use it on my back, I even use it on my armpit for body odor."
