What the gurus are saying

Gurus confirm minoxidil 5% is effective for hair loss, though results vary; some people's hair follicles don't respond due to enzyme activation issues, and it tends to underperform in advanced hair loss. The foam formulation is preferred over solution to avoid scalp irritation from propylene glycol. Women can use it despite label warnings, though 2% may be less reliable for female users. Pairing with tretinoin may help boost efficacy for non-responders.

"If you have female pattern alopecia androgenetic alopecia, if you're a man, check out Minoxidil 5%. And don't worry if the label says not for use by women. Women can use topical minoxidil 5%. Try to go for the foam as much as possible since the solution can be more drying and irritating to the scalp due to having propylene glycol."

"Minoxidil 5% is effective. 2% can be effective in women but it is more likely to be a dud. Some people don't respond to minoxidil. Minoxidil by itself is actually useless when you put it on the scalp, it has to be activated by an enzyme in your hair follicle, and turns out not everybody's enzyme is as willing to participate or as involved in the process. For those people in particular there's no way to identify if you're that way or not other than minoxidil just doesn't seem to work so well for you. But for people like that they can really turn a corner with minoxidil if they start applying tretinoin alongside the minoxidil because tretinoin may enhance penetration but it also may activate that enzyme that is necessary. Minoxidil is often incredibly underwhelming for people who are more advanced in their androgenetic alopecia, farther along in the process."
