  • Sits well under makeup

What they flagged

  • Can feel drying for some
  • Thicker, richer texture than expected

What the gurus are saying

Despite its serum name, this sunscreen has a thicker, richer consistency than expected, which gurus find sits beautifully under makeup and works well for drier skin or winter use. It applies smoothly, sinks in without heaviness, and layers without trouble, though some people report it can feel drying. Those with oily or sensitive skin may want to patch-test first, since irritation is mentioned as a concern for some.

"This is one that I picked up recently this summer by Garnier, it is called the Invisible Serum Super UV 50. Oh my gosh, it's really good. It's clear, it is invisible, and if that's a worry of yours, this is fantastic. I loved it, used it up. The only thing I don't like about it is it's really small. I mean it's only 30 mils, like that's tiny. Because when you compare it to these, you know, this one is 50 mils, it you just have to buy a lot of them. But I can buy them at the grocery store so if you find yourself in a pickle, I just thought that was a fantastic product, really really good, very very lightweight."

"Many say that that is irritating and it can be drying. I personally have had no problems with it. It goes on easily, it sinks in, and I can layer it so I can just throw as much of this stuff on as I want without any trouble whatsoever. It also works perfectly under makeup and wearing it alone. In fact, it's what I'm wearing today underneath the Anthelios SPF, which is really a makeup. These two together are beautiful. So for me, this is one that I will repurchase, and it's a really good drugstore find. It's easy, you can find it pretty much everywhere. I personally think it's great and it's worth a checkout. I'll definitely be using it over and over."

"This is called the 50 Plus Super UV Invisible Serum. It costs 15 euros and it just disappears into the skin. It is incredibly lightweight. It is a chemical sunscreen just to warn you. I don't have any problems with it whatsoever, even putting it over my eyelids, and it just is the perfect foundation for anything else I'm going to put on it later. It just soaks up and leaves a perfectly beautiful seamless little finish on it. For me, this is one that I would repurchase again and again. If you're looking for affordable and if you're looking for one that isn't going to irritate your skin and it leaves a light finish and disappears, this is the one."

"Garnier this year have launched the invisible serum super UV SPF 50 which I know what you're thinking oh it's a serum it'll be lighter somehow it's thicker though right I don't know why it's like that see oh it takes a while to run down your hand that's how you can always tell and it's definitely definitely definitely a thicker richer consistency it all goes on beautifully still sits well under makeup better for dryer skins or for me in winter still love the original however what I have fallen in love with this is this this is without a doubt the best"

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
