What the gurus are saying

Gurus agree finasteride is effective at slowing hair loss when taken consistently, with most endorsing it as a solid option. The consensus concern is sexual side effects, especially with oral formulations, which some find hard to reverse. Topical finasteride is widely preferred as a lower-risk alternative with localized delivery. All experts agree it is unsafe during pregnancy or for those trying to conceive.

"I've been taking this for a couple years and I do believe that it is keeping the grays at bay. 90% of people found with finasteride, which is normally a medication for men's prostate, have been seeing a decrease in hair loss by 20% in 90% of people, and that is because it reduces the DHT. So remember when I said testosterone when we get older gets converted to DHT and testosterone is great for the hair, DHT is not good for the hair. What finasteride does is it reduces the DHT conversion so that hair you will end up keeping a lot longer."

"I like to incorporate minoxidil, finasteride, and or spironolactone depending on the person. If you are a childbearing woman these are not options for you right now because it's not safe for you. In the right person it's a topical minoxidil or finasteride or an oral version of those medications."

"Finasteride is a nice oral prescription medication. It works to prevent hair loss in male patients with thinning at the crown and receding hairline. Topical formulations are also available and we do talk about that for male patients and also female patients. That might be a nice option to have like minoxidil compounded with finasteride. I have a few patients over age 60, say 65, or doing very well on that."

"Personally, I take finasteride and I've taken it after my surgery about 6 years ago."

"The biggest side effects for both men and women are going to be libido, which can truly really happen, I actually had patients who've complained about this and it is very hard to reverse, so I personally do not give finasteride orally anymore. You can have erectile dysfunction and it could really also even affect women. Finasteride is available topically, and we believe there's going to be much less systemic absorption because it's localized to the area that you're treating. There is still potentially a chance that it can be systemically absorbed, so all of those side effects that I mentioned are possibilities, but they are much less likely to happen. However, if you're trying to carry a baby or you want to get pregnant or you are pregnant, I would just avoid finasteride topically until you're done with that phase of your life. It works topically by blocking five alpha reductase, which makes dihydrotestosterone. Honestly, I think anybody, man or woman, who's not looking to have a baby should be on this topically as an adjunct to minoxidil. It works really well together."
