    What the gurus are saying

This 10% urea lotion (the highest non-prescription concentration) breaks down keratin buildup and tackles keratosis pilaris, though dermatologists emphasize it works slowly and requires consistent use over weeks to show results. The formulation separates slightly, so shake before each use. The oil-based texture spreads smoothly without stickiness, and both doctors found it well-tolerated on tough spots like elbows and knees.

"This is on the stronger side, so it breaks down the keratin buildup while deeply moisturizing. It can help soothe irritation, reduce rough texture. It works really, really well for severe keratosis pilaris or dry skin or eczema prone skin. So, if your earlier tip of glycolic acid on your keratosis pilaris didn't work alone, do the glycolic acid and apply urea on top of that and you've got a combination to eliminate your keratosis pilaris bumps. The key ingredient in this product is urea 10% and also contains some ceramides and natural moisturizing factors."

"If your skin is extra dry or super flaky and none of this is working for you, consider adding in a moisturizer with urea. Urea is a naturally occurring compound in the skin that plays a critical role in maintaining hydration and exfoliation. It's part of the natural moisturizing factor which helps the skin retain water and stay smooth. Eucerin UreaRepair Plus lotion has 10% urea, it gently exfoliates flaky skin while deeply hydrating it, and it restores the skin barrier and prevents further moisture loss."

"My first recommendation in the urea category is the Eucerin UreaRepair Plus 10% Urea Lotion. It breaks down the keratin buildup while deeply moisturizing. It will soothe irritation, reduce any rough texture, and it works especially well for really severe KP with dry skin and eczema prone skin. The ingredients are 10% urea, ceramides 3, and natural moisturizing factor or NMF."

"At the sweet spot of 10%, urea can not only do its job of being a keratolytic, which means it's going to slough off those rough surface areas of skin on your body like your elbows, your knees, the bottom of your feet, areas that tend to get a little bit of a buildup that become rough. But at 10% it is also going to pull in water and act like a humectant. So it's the perfect blend of hydrating and softening and smoothing your skin in one. This hydrating moisturizer is beautiful. I absolutely love it. It hydrates my skin. It leaves me feeling supple and soft and it does have a fast dry down. I like fragrance, and it is something that I love to use because it makes me feel better. Part of skincare is to feel like you got away, and this product does that for me."

"I love this one by Eucerin, it is their urea lotion 10. The combination of glycolic acid and urea works wonders if you're someone who's bougie and just wants to buy the product dedicated for this issue."

"Urea is known to be a keratolytic agent, it is going to break down the keratin causing desquamation and shedding of the thickened cells while also helping with skin hydration. So if you're on the ashy side or if you're on the drier side, urea might be a great ingredient to incorporate into your skin regimen. Creams with 10 to 20% urea are ideal. Eucerin has, and I have it by my shower, their urea lotion 10, which offers intense hydration, and this is a 10% urea with dexpanthenol, which is a nice bonus."

"I absolutely am obsessed with this guy. It has 10 percent urea, panthenol, and the consistency is on the thicker end of the spectrum. It smells like laundry, there is fragrance to it so if you're sensitive watch out, but if you're not sensitive enjoy the aromatherapy. I love the scent of this guy and sometimes I'll even put it on my neck and chest, especially as the chest starts to get thinner as we age."

"We have the Urea Repair Plus which is 10% urea, the highest urea you can get on a non-prescription. I've had a few patients actually with keratosis, as we commonly see in clinic, and I've tried it over two to three months and the remarkable results that you can get because of the urea and because of the hydrating component as well and the barrier protection. This guarantees immediate relief within 48 hours. You do want to shake it because I find that the formulation separates a little bit, but it is actually really quite nice, very easy to spread and very well tolerated generally as well. I've used it on elbows and I've used it on knees and I found that quite, really does make a difference. But the key with this is consistency. I don't expect one or two applications to make a difference. You need to be consistent because urea is very slow acting. They've got some more ceramides in here which are great, you've got a specific formula with urea and natural moisturizing factors which are all great to help with the skin barrier. But the reason why it doesn't feel sticky is that it's in an oil emulsion, which is why you need to give it a shake beforehand."

"I have gone through so many bottles of this, it is ridiculous. What I love about this is it's somehow lightweight but super super hydrating at the same time. I have some products that you put on and they're so heavy, which I love, takes a long time to rub them in, but you get that hydration. This is the complete opposite of that but it gives you the same result. It's a little bit watery in texture but I love it and I will continue to repurchase. You can get it at the drugstore and that's a big bonus for me."

"The next product is Eucerin Urea Repair. This is water, urea 5%, and it's soap-free, so I do like this for dry skin. It's got no other bells and whistles, no other actives in it, but it's good for dry skin or eczema-prone skin."

"The Eucerin urea repair is great if you've also got a damaged skin barrier. I think urea is a bit of an unsung hero. It's a great hydrator. It's really nice on the skin and it's not sticky."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

    Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

    Source: DermNet

    Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
