"This lotion uses 10% urea plus gentle exfoliating acids to dissolve the dead skin cells that are causing rough skin while moisturizing at the same time, so there's no gritty scrubs and you're not going to irritate your barrier. If you have keratosis pilaris or you have rough patches on your elbows or knees or even heels, this is the product that I would reach for. It's going to change the texture rather than just sit on top of your skin."

"Eucerin's roughness relief, [...] urea is in Eucerin and the product. Urea is so great at drawing in water and also gently exfoliating dead skin cells. So I really love those products. Those are great to start off with, especially applying after a shower. It will help with those dry, ashy knees and elbows."

"They make a lotion which is more lightweight, and it's a little bit more application friendly than the cream. It's a great one for dry skin as well as improving the look of discoloration on the body. In addition to lactic acid and urea, this also has ceramides."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
