    What the gurus are saying

The thick, occlusive texture earns consistent praise from those dealing with eczema and dry skin, particularly in winter when irritation flares. Gurus found it works across ages, from babies to adults, and note a little goes a long way, making it a long-lasting option. That said, only a handful of experts have weighed in so far, so there is not yet a wide picture of how it performs for different skin types.

"It has the same 1% colloidal oatmeal for the active and also has the ceramides for support, but the real difference maker here is licochalcone A, a licorice root extract that helps calm redness and irritation. The texture is a touch richer than the Aveeno, and it's also very well tolerated for daily use, including on kids. For patients whose eczema shows up more angry and red, that licorice root addition can help calm down some of that inflammation, and the price per ounce tends to run a little friendlier too. I like Eucerin for redness because you're going to really soothe the inflammation down with the licorice root."

"I personally like the Eucerin eczema moisturizer. I think it's thick, and even though it's more targeted towards eczema, I think it would work really well for mature skin."

"Eucerin eczema relief is like one of the best moisturizers and they'll last you like a super long time. It's such a nice thick, rich moisturizer. The price has gone all the way down to $21, which is pretty good. It usually sits around $38. Currently sitting at $30, which is not bad. The lowest price of the year was $21. These I really, really like. I'll grab up more of these."

"My daughter has really dry skin and Eucerin Eczema Relief Cream has been really a game changer for her. I actually tried so many different products. This is really targeted towards people who have eczema, but it really works well with anybody who has dry skin, whether an adult or a baby. I use this on my daughter, but sometimes I use this on myself. It really is a thick moisturizer."

"I happen to be a huge fan of the Eucerin Eczema Relief. It's a colloidal oatmeal based product with ceramide, and colloidal oatmeal is a great skin protectant that helps reduce water loss from the skin. It also has glycyrrhiza inflata root extract from licorice root, which is helpful for people who have eczema or very sensitive skin, and its anti-inflammatory properties can help with hyperpigmentation and redness. It's free of fragrance, which is a common allergen that can be particularly problematic for people who have eczema."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
