What the gurus are saying

Urea and ceramides work together to soften sandpapery palms and repair the skin barrier, while the alpha hydroxy acid gently exfoliates to prevent dead skin buildup that leads to cracks. The formula absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue on your hands. One thing to keep in mind: if you have pre-existing cracks or fissures, the acid may sting temporarily, so you may want to ease in or use it only on unbroken skin at first.

"Eucerin is just known for making great urea based products. [...] User has done a great job with making it very delicate for our hands. And so their Advanced Repair Hand Cream is just a plus. There you have urea to help bring in moisture and help peel away dead skin. So those who have that rough sandpapery texture of their palms go for this one. So it helps soften thickened skin. You have ceramides which are part of the glue that hold our skin cells together. [...] You have it here in the Eucerin product as well. So great for that rough texture, especially in the wintertime."

"Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Cream is a really hydrating, moisturizing but fast absorbing and leaves minimal residue so that way after using it you don't leave imprints of things that you touch with your hands. Ingredient wise it contains ceramide 3, essential ceramides that really help to restore our skin barrier along with alpha hydroxy acid that can gently exfoliate, helps to hydrate at the same time and reduce the buildup of dead skin that may contribute to thickened skin that can easily crack. One thing to keep in mind is that any moisturizer that contains alpha hydroxy acid, if you put on skin that has pre-existing cracks and fissures it will burn temporarily, so just be careful of that. Otherwise this is a great one to have on hand to use regularly to keep the skin on your hands soft and hydrated."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
