    What the gurus are saying

Urea in this cream both hydrates and gently exfoliates dead skin, making it especially prized for thickened patches like elbows, knees, and feet. Dermatologists suggest applying it to damp skin within two minutes of showering to lock in moisture, and note that those with very dry skin may want to layer an occlusive like Vaseline on top for extra protection. The menthol can soothe itch, though the standard formula does contain fragrance, which may not suit sensitive skin.

"For a nice body moisturizer, something with urea would be Eucerin's Advanced Repair Cream. One of my favorite body moisturizers because it comes in a nice jar, a little goes a long way. Urea is a nice humectant that draws in water, but also is a keratolytic that will peel away dead skin and exfoliate gently dead skin. So if you have dry, thickened elbows or knees, feet, hands, you can go ahead and use this Advanced Repair Cream on those areas, and the urea will really come to the rescue and make your skin nice and soft. And if you apply it within 2 minutes after getting out of the shower, when your skin's slightly damp, it's going to work so well and just trap in all of that moisture."

"That formula is really good to have lots of Urea which is a natural moisturizing factor found in your skin that helps hydrate by bringing in water and it's a humectant so like hyaluronic acid draws in water but it's also catalytic it breaks up and peels away dead skin gently so I like Eucerin a lot for that purpose"

"Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream is one of my favorite body moisturizers out there. That's an awesome one with urea, higher concentrations of urea, which is a humectant that draws in water, but also exfoliates dead skin as well. So, great for just overall body, but focusing on elbows and knees where you have thicker skin. And you can bring it down to your feet and also to your hands."

"Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream is one of my favorite body moisturizers. Do that at bedtime. After your shower you want to apply to damp skin a good moisturizer and this one is where it's at. It has a little bit of urea and ceramide. I just love the texture. It's not a lotion, it's thicker, it's a cream, so it locks in moisture that you got from the shower."

"If you want to have something during the day, you can do something with urea, like the Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream. That's a nice one with urea. Urea is a humectant that draws in water and it also is a catalyst. So it helps turn over dead skin."

"It's very hydrating you can use it on the face however if you're using a retinol to your face already or a prescription retinoid I don't recommend double dipping but it's amazing. Itch becomes a lot more common once you are over the age of 40. Menthol can help distract the little itch nerves and help to soothe that sensation. Don't underestimate how itch can start to mess up your sleep cycle and lead to poor overall sleep quality that you're not even aware is happening because of those low-level scratching arousals at night. Itch tends to get much worse at night so another pro tip is with something like this put it in your refrigerator and apply it to the skin and it'll really silence that edge."

"I recommend checking out Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream. This is fragrance-free, lightweight moisturizer that absorbs really quickly without leaving kind of that sticky residue where some creams can feel. Ingredient-wise it contains urea, lactic acid, ceramides, glycerin, so wonderful ingredients that help to keep the skin hydrated. Urea and lactic acid also really helps to exfoliate gently, so great for dry flaky skin, those that are prone to keratosis pilaris, so chicken goosebump skin that we often see in association with dry skin and eczema. I personally love using it during the summer time because of the lightweight fast absorbing texture, but certainly depending on where you live, like for me I always use a thicker cream in the winter, a lighter cream lotion that's fast absorbing in the summer. But if you live in a warmer climate all year round this could be a good option for you if you have more dry and eczema prone skin."

"For the body you can add in something like the Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream. This is super nice, super friendly, budget friendly, and it also has natural moisturizing factors and ceramides which would play exactly how you would want with maturing skin."

"Eucerin is extremely affordable and they have really effective products. There's a ton of research and development that goes into their products, so I highly recommend you check those out. The Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream comes in a jar and is just a really thick consistency, so it's really going to give you a lot of hydration back and help create that barrier on top of the skin to decrease how much water your skin is losing. It goes on the skin really nicely. It's nothing fancy but it really gets the job done. For conditions like eczema, you don't want fancy, you want simple products that don't have a lot of ingredients in them, and you want things that are proven by science to help repair your skin."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

    Urea

Urea both holds water in the skin and gently loosens dead surface cells. At higher strengths it has good evidence for very dry or thickened skin.

    Source: DermNet

    Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.
