What the gurus are saying

Despite being marketed as exfoliating, it delivers no actual exfoliation. It's really just a deeply hydrating toner with a refreshing, pool-like texture that works well across all skin types. Reviewers loved the deep hydration most and found it gentle enough for sensitive and dry skin with zero tingle or irritation, even when layered multiple times to build the hydrating effect.

"This is a toner that's deeply hydrating but also gently exfoliating. It's not a harsh exfoliation, you can use it daily, it's safe to use before you go out in the sun. It's very, very mild. I love building up layers of toner, and what you're doing is hydrating that skin without using something too thick or too heavy underneath your foundation, but you're giving yourselves excessive layers of moisture. One of my favorite toners ever."

"I didn't think this was going to be that hydrating when I first tried it. I'm so picky about toners, and that's probably what I'm most known for in skincare content. I'm very picky about hydration levels. But when I tried it out on my face, I actually really loved it. It's surprisingly hydrating. There's an ingredient in here - proteins or proteose - and I don't notice any real benefits from it. I personally just find this to be a nicely hydrating toner. Having used it for a month or two since I first reviewed it, it makes my skin feel very smooth. I think it's helping to shed dead skin cells. I'm already pretty well exfoliated and using other exfoliants, so it's not adding a ton of benefit, but I do notice my skin feels a lot smoother when I'm using this consistently. I've seen reviews from folks who noticed a lot more improvement in their skin texture, especially with acne-prone and congestion-prone skin. They're noticing that this toner is helping them. But this requires consistency - it's not going to wow you overnight. You have to use it daily for a long period."

"It just feels very refreshing, very swimming pool like, I will admit. Um, very deeply hydrating."

"This is very viral. It's a watery toner, but a pretty generous amount comes out, so if you layer it two or three times I can totally feel that it's hydrating. They market it as a non-irritating exfoliating toner because they didn't put AHA or BHA in it, but I didn't notice any exfoliating effect at all. Nobody cares about this brand in Korea, it's just a viral brand, but it's pretty impressive. They made it pretty good for all skin types."

Testing Viral Korean Skincare and Makeup Products - Worth The Hype?
"This EqualBerry Swimming Pool Toner is a watery toner and it does its job, though don't expect too much from a toner, it's just there to hydrate and prep your skin like a good appetizer before the rest of your routine. It feels so good, and even though it's labeled as exfoliating I don't feel any tingle at all, so it's fine for sensitive and dry skin types."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
