What the gurus are saying

Gurus recognize Mounjaro's mechanism as effective for appetite suppression and weight loss, with one praising its extended half-life allowing the hormone to circulate longer in the body. However, concerns emerge about potential metabolic slowdown and rebound weight gain after discontinuation, with skepticism about whether the medication's effects on digestion create lasting metabolic changes. The community view is cautiously divided on whether short-term results justify long-term metabolic risks.

"The newest medication on the market is tirzepatide, so that's Mounjaro or Zepbound. There's a GLP1 agonist component and a GIP, so it has two hormones. These are basically synthetic hormones of GLP1 that have a component in it that prevents the breakdown of it, so the hormone GLP1 is around your body a lot longer. The half-life is about a week, so instead of you releasing this hormone and it being broken down in one to two minutes, the hormone is floating around for a lot longer. It sends signals to our brain where we have receptors and it says, 'Brain, I'm full,' even while you just started eating because it's already around in the body. It also slows down the rate at which the stomach empties, so if it takes a normal stomach four hours to empty, then the food in your stomach may stay in there for five or six hours. It usually delays that by about one hour."

"When you're on semaglutide, which is the active ingredient in those weight loss shots, it's a GLP-1 agonist, right, so it makes you feel full. It slows down the pace at which your food travels through your digestive tract. Now if we just all put on our thinking caps for a second and thought about metabolism, there should be some bells going off that when you get off of this, that has slowed down your metabolism because it slowed down the way food moves through your body. You're going to have a rebound effect."
