What the gurus are saying

Gold stabilization solves what breaks most vitamin C serums down: the instability of L-ascorbic acid. Experts say it keeps the brightening and antioxidant benefits working as intended, and they praise the hydration, zero irritation for those sensitive to ascorbic acid, and versatility across both oily and dry skin. Though pricey, reviewers find it outperforms similar products at double the cost.

"Golden Hour is supposed to be a gold stabilized vitamin C, and it's a little pricey. I let it sit for about six months to see how true that stabilization claim was, and with that gold stabilized vitamin C, it is working. This is the most expensive product in this video by a lot, I know not everybody has the money for it, but I do feel like this is a much better option compared to similar products that are double the price."

"Vitamin C is a great way to help neutralize free radicals, support collagen production, and keep pigmentation in check over time. I see it as a prevention as much as a correction. This is Educated Mess's Golden Hour vitamin C serum. We are talking zero irritation for those of you who have a sensitivity to [L-ascorbic] acid. It is super lightweight and it plays so well with others. It also has fruit enzymes to help with texture and the glow of our skin. But the real antioxidant powerhouse is the combination of the [L-ascorbic] acid with gold glutathione. I mean, it is powerful powerful stuff. To me, it's just a joy to use and it's so easy to get into the routine."

"The gold encapsulates the ascorbic acid to ensure it penetrates the skin. It keeps it stable and it makes it less irritating. Plus, it has a ton of hydrating ingredients and it plays well with everything else. I absolutely love this product. This has become my favorite vitamin C product."

"This is one that I feel like I haven't given enough attention to and this is the Golden Hour Gold Stabilized Vitamin C Serum by Educated Mess. It's an antioxidant serum designed to brighten and even out skin tone whilst providing really instant hydration, and that's what I love about this. A lot of vitamin C serums are just that, and I feel like I'm always removing one serum to bring in [...] a vitamin C serum. What I love about this one from Educated Mess is it feels like I'm just using one of my favorite hydrating morning serums that just so happens to have gold stabilized vitamin C, which enhances the stability and efficacy of the vitamin C. Vitamin C being known for its ability to help with collagen production, antioxidant protection against free radicals, and reduce hyperpigmentation, but in here it is stabilized in that gold, basically extending the shelf life of your product so you get maximum benefits from that vitamin C. We have glutathione in here as well, another powerful antioxidant that works with the vitamin C that protects skin from oxidative stress."

My Favourite Most Effective Skincare Routine So Far - Morning & Evening Routine
"I always feel myself wanting to use a different serum in place of a vitamin C serum because I kind of want in the mornings to use a really nicely hydrating, quenching serum to give this plumpness to my skin throughout the day and feel more hydrated throughout the day, and I feel like a lot of vitamin C serums don't really focus on that. But Educated Mess's Golden Hour, which has vitamin A, gold, and stabilized vitamin C, is one I've not really come across in a vitamin C serum. The texture is gloopy and hydrating and clear and it sounds really weird. In here we have the gold stabilized vitamin C, which is the first ascorbic acid complex that delivers vitamin C in a 100% stable, 100% active form. Then White Butterfly Ginger, which provides support against factors that accelerate aging like UV, blue light, and internal stress. And a fermented pomegranate enzyme, which is a very, very gentle exfoliation so gentle you don't even feel it. You can use it alongside other exfoliants."
The Best And WORST Skincare Products I've Used Recently - Skincare Hits And Sh*ts
"Educated Mess Golden Hour is a gold stabilized vitamin C serum so it doesn't oxidize as quickly, it's not going to turn brown. It's got gold and glutathione in here which they say provides your skin with the most stable form of ascorbic acid on the market, not only preventing it from breaking it down but also extending its shelf life as well. So yeah you get all the benefits of vitamin C. I'm mainly using it nowadays alongside sunscreen for its antioxidant properties. What I love about this serum in particular is how hydrating it is, it feels like a hyaluronic acid serum. We have Marine bioferment in here which is extremely hydrating. They say that the bioferment was found to boost components of skin's natural moisturizing factors, helping to reduce water loss from the skin, improve hydration whilst giving your skin that really supple hydrated dewy looking glow. And you really feel that from this, your skin feels hydrated, it looks supple, bouncy and dewy. I just love this. I'm using this every morning. Even if this didn't have vitamin C in, if this was just a hydrating serum, it would be my go-to morning serum. I absolutely love it. I love the way it makes my skin look. I love that for a vitamin C serum it's very, very different."

"My favorite from them is their vitamin C formula and it is stabilized by gold, which seems a little bit bougie, but it gets around the problem of vitamin C stabilization."

"There's absolutely no scent with this formula. And there's no viscosity. You know how sometimes vitamin C's can feel a little bit greasy or tacky or sticky? Not this one. It sinks right into your skin. It almost feels like you don't even have a serum on. So, you get a dose of vitamin C stabilized. Sinks right in. Doesn't interfere with the rest of your skin care. Loving this new vitamin C."
What Your Microcurrent Can Do for Dark Spots (That Nobody Talks About)
"Starting with a brightening vitamin C. This is the one by Educated Mess. It's kind of next in line for my vitamin C serums that I'm trying. This one is interesting because it's stabilized by Gold. It's a very interesting formula by Alex Padet. If you have not heard of her, she is a real knowledgeable person. If you want to learn about skincare ingredients, oh my goodness, and she has come out with her own line called Educated Mess, including a really interesting vitamin C formula that I'm excited to try."

"This is a really lovely vitamin C. It's stabilized by gold which you might say oh that's kind of weird and gimmicky but it actually helps stabilize the [L-ascorbic] acid. As we know [L-ascorbic] acid is super super unstable. So stabilizing the [L-ascorbic] acid is essential for actually getting it to do what it's supposed to be doing, lightening, brightening, using it as an antioxidant. If it's unstable, it's just going to break apart and it won't help with brightening and it certainly won't function as an antioxidant. It has a bunch of other ingredients in here and it doesn't have an odor. It's kind of a jelly texture. Kind of has some slip to it, but it isn't tacky. It just dries right in. If you have oily skin, you're going to love it. If you have dry skin, you'll just feel slightly hydrated. You can move on quickly to the rest of your skincare routine. This is a lovely vitamin C. It's actually one of my favorites that I've tried in a long time."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
