What the gurus are saying

This cream splits the experts: one finds it noticeably drying, which matters if your skin tends toward tightness or flaking. The other praises how it delivers full coverage without looking heavy or cakey, keeping a natural finish even at that depth. Patch-testing first makes sense given the dryness concern, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin.

"This was an epic fail for me, unfortunately. I was really hoping it would work out because it's a mineral sunscreen, but it was so drying, like very, very drying. It was in my January fails video."

"I tried the e.l.f. Camo CC Cream in January and it was a fail for me. The coverage on it is actually really nice, but it's holy dry, like a Sahara Desert. If you have fine lines or wrinkles anywhere, or just with moving your face, it will accentuate them. Men tend to have oilier skin so this might actually end up working out better for men, and there's a good array of shades, but for me, no thank you, it was a fail."
JANUARY 2023 FAILS & FAVORITES 😍 Skincare & Lifestyle @DrDrayzday
"I bought the e.l.f. Camo CC Cream in the shade light 210N. This is a hybrid sunscreen SPF 30, it also has niacinamide, helpful for redness, and some peptides which can help with the moisture content in the skin. The shade worked out really well for me and the coverage is pretty good, if you have discoloration or redness you're trying to camouflage this really does a good job. However, it's super drying and it just accentuates the look of any crease, crevice, or pore, it really made my pores look like swiss cheese. Smiling with this just accentuates all the little fine lines, it's not comfortable to wear, it made my face kind of itchy. I was really bummed because they have a pretty nice shade selection. This is very drying, and I do not recommend it."

"I like this better than the IT CC cream which was a favorite of mine for a long time. People were comparing it directly to the IT CC cream and when I tried this I was like I like this better. It's not as heavy looking on the skin as that CC cream. This retails for about fourteen dollars and offers medium to full coverage. This has an SPF 30, it's a hybrid mineral chemical SPF, and having sunscreen in here is fine. This also does contain some skin care with collagen peptides and niacinamide. It's very hydrating so this would be really great for people with drier skin. Like the L'Oreal foundations this was easy to apply. This did settle in my wrinkles a tiny bit but the things that don't crack and make my wrinkles look bigger and make me look cakey, I really don't like. This is really beautiful and natural looking on the skin, it doesn't look like makeup sitting on your skin. It wore great on my combo skin, it wore really well in my t-zone, and didn't wear off on my nose through a full ten hour day of testing. This is a beautiful foundation that I really loved when I tried it and I think it's a really good one to try if you're more mature and looking for a great foundation."

"I really like this foundation. For something that's full coverage this does have a really kind of natural finish. It doesn't look crazy, crazy full. It doesn't look like cakey on the skin, or anything like that."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
