  • Tint too warm for very fair skin tones
  • Limited to one shade option

What the gurus are saying

The hybrid mineral-chemical formula blends seamlessly into skin and delivers a natural, dewy finish that works beautifully as a foundation dupe, especially for those with hyperpigmentation or melasma who need reliable sun protection with cosmetic payoff. The universal tint leans warm and works best for medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick 3-4); those with very fair or deeper skin may find it does not match their tone, so patch-testing first is worth doing. Apply liberally for full SPF protection.

"The Dermatology Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46 is one of few hybrid Western sunscreens that I can use, and I love it. Somehow the tint actually works on my skin tone, I never believe universal shades, but this one works on my skin tone and I really like it. They do run some really good sales on their website as well."

"Dermatology as a brand has a lot of great tinted moisturizers. This is where I found one of my favorite tinted moisturizers. The Universal Tinted Moisturizer has a combo of zinc oxide, which is a mineral filter, and octinoxate, which is a chemical filter. [...] These have a pretty neutral tint to them which makes them pretty friendly for most skin types. I think that's where a lot of people struggle finding one that works well and still matches their skin type and still has the good ingredients in there. [...] You can see how nice it would be and evening on your skin and just set it with a little bit of powder and you're good. But be sure to apply it liberally. That's going to be the most important thing."

Beauty & Skincare Products For Busy People: How To Multi-task Your Skincare Routine
"The Dermatology Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46 is 29 bucks and this one works great as a sunscreen as well as a foundation. It's got enough tint in it to even out skin tone, so if you're looking for something that's really nice as a sunscreen and moisturizer and kind of foundation, this kind of does all of them. It's a combo chemical mineral sunscreen and it's still got a nice tone. The tone is universal for most people, except for the very very fair because it can end up making you look a little too deep. But overall, when you're just looking for something that's very quick and easy, this is nice. It's hydrating, it's got sun protection, and it evens out your skin tone so you don't have to apply foundation afterward, so it's really nice for that."

"It's a really nice sunscreen. It's got zinc oxide as well as octanoate, so it's a hybrid mineral chemical sunscreen. It's got a pretty nice universal tint to it and once it smooths into skin it just gives skin kind of a nice glow and feels really nice on the skin. No fragrance or anything like that, so it's pretty friendly for most skin types. Really nice foundation-free sunscreen."

It's one of our favorites in our household that we use on a daily basis. It's not water resistant though, so that's more for protecting your skin on a daily basis without getting sweaty or jumping in the water."

So if you're somebody who's using remedy for dark spots, I highly recommend using a tinted sunscreen and I really think that you'll like this one. [...] The hybrid one is really my favorite. [...] Over the course of probably four or five years I've been strongly recommending this brand, and this one has stood the test of time, especially in the demographic of probably 20 to 50 year old women. BEST and WORST DRMTLGY Products | Doctorly Reviews
"This is a top seller ultimately, but just blends super well with the skin. It's a tinted sunscreen, and I love a tinted sunscreen, especially for those who are prone to hyperpigmentation. It gives you some cosmetic benefit, but the truth is when it comes to sunscreen, the only thing that I care about is whether it's going to be cosmetically elegant and does it meet the SPF rating of its intended goal. For me, this blends super well, blends in super nice. My wife uses this as a foundation dupe. She has a fairly complicated skincare routine, and she layers her skincare with it. It works exceptionally well for her, and for easily 3 years this has been her everyday foundation dupe and replacement."
BEST SUNSCREENS EVER?! | Doctorly Reviews
"Very lightweight moisturizer, I'll say. It's more of a lotion than a cream in consistency. Lightweight moisturizer, it's also tinted, so great for hyperpigmentation, and is actually pretty near invisible, even though it's a mix between zinc oxide and octinoxate. Yeah, great moisturizer overall, easy to apply, foundation dupe, really can do a lot in a routine to help simplify things."
BEST MOISTURIZERS OF THE YEAR | DOCTORLY REVIEWS
"The Dermatology Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46 is tinted, so it gives you actual added coverage against visible light. Unlike some of the other tinted moisturizers, this blends in pretty well and it doesn't pill as much as some of the other ones. My wife has been using this actually as her foundation, and I know some other people like Abby Young who use SPFs as foundation dupes as well for like four to maybe six months now consistently, and it's just worked great. It's super lightweight and it's not that greasy. Sometimes I think SPF moisturizers can feel really greasy, but this is not as greasy as a lot of them."
BATTLE OF THE SUNSCREENS: ELTAMD vs DRMTLGY
"I love this product because it is a tinted SPF in a moisturizer, and when you have it in a lightweight moisturizer vehicle, I find it's very natural to reapply throughout the day. It's a combination sunscreen with zinc oxide and octinoxate, plus niacinamide, so you can sneak in your niacinamide. It leaves no white cast and definitely leaves you with a more dewy hydrated finish. Even though I love this moisturizer and SPF for most people, for me it leaves me too dewy since I'm all about a matte finish, but it's certainly not a mattifying SPF. For me personally, I'll lean Dermatology, which actually surprises me because my thing has always been to double SPF as my moisturizer, especially in the summers."

"One I hadn't used for a while, but I recently brought back into my rotation and I forgot how good it is, is the DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer. It's SPF 46. It's really hydrating. It helps kind of cancel out some of my hyperpigmentation and my redness. So to me, that's such a great multitasker."
Yay
"I also suggest a hybrid sunscreen from Dermatology, and this is a great everyday facial moisturizer and it has niacinamide in it which is good for the redness of rosacea and also helps to address the moisture barrier and calm down inflammation."

My Top 5 Most Purchased Skincare Products Of The Year!
"It's a moisturizer with a broad spectrum sunscreen, it's a great option in the winter months. The tint is not overly orange, too yellow, it's not too peachy. It's fragrance-free. Now it does have a bit of an odd odor which some people find off-putting, but that odor doesn't linger. I like to refer to it as the pool float odor, and honestly I think that odor is part of why I like using it. I don't know, somehow I've bonded with it. This is one I love and adore. I mean it pretty much always makes its way into a sunscreen empties. My one thing with this is I do wish it were water resistant for days that you are mostly outdoors or doing outdoor activities or water-based sports, but for the winter time when you need a good moisturizer with sunscreen, this is one I can't recommend more strongly."
Colorescience Total Eye DUPE? DRMTLGY Luminous Eye Corrector SPF 41 Review
"One of my all-time favorite facial sunscreens from Dermatology is their Universal Tint. It's an all mineral formula with zinc and titanium dioxide, and honestly that's a good choice for everyday use because it's a lot more likely to be tolerable. One of the advantages of choosing a tinted sunscreen is that the tint comes from iron oxides, which have been shown to be helpful for protecting the skin from wavelengths of light from the sun that are not ultraviolet radiation but rather blue light, and we now know that leads to more early onset and stubborn and persistent hyperpigmentation. So if your skin heals with a dark mark or you have any kind of dark spots you're hoping to improve the appearance of or get to fade, choose a tinted sunscreen."

"It's tinted and it's fragrance free, it is a hybrid sunscreen so it has zinc and it has some organic filters. In my opinion for my skin tone there is no cast. The tint is not orangey at all. It has niacinamide and I love this, I mean it's like a favorite for me. The only thing is that it's not water resistant, but this brand makes some water resistant sunscreens that are pretty good. Easy to tolerate around the eyes."

"I finished up this bottle of the DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46. I really like this, it has niacinamide in it, but I want to make my way through this. [...] It's really moisturizing, it spreads really well on the skin, but this one has niacinamide in it as well, which is good for redness and hyperpigmentation in my neck, and it's pretty inexpensive too. I really think this one's a bit underrated. It's not oily and I can tolerate it around my eyes too, water resistant 80 minutes, it's very hydrating. [...] I really like it."

Amazing Sunscreens I've Used Up | Empties 🗑️
"This makes its way into pretty much every sunscreen empties video on this channel. It's the DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46. This is one of my favorite, most repurchased sunscreens. I did a video recently on the skincare products I keep buying over and over again, our most repurchased skincare products from 2023, and this made its way in there. I buy this all the time. It's a hybrid sunscreen, the first hybrid sunscreen I've mentioned in this empties video. Hybrid sunscreens are kind of the best of both worlds in terms of inorganic, aka mineral, and organic, aka chemical, sunscreen active ingredients. They're often less irritating to people who are sensitive to the organic sunscreens, but they're also less casty in comparison to an all inorganic sunscreen. They do leave a little bit of a cast depending on your skin type, but overall are much less casty than an all zinc or zinc titanium dioxide sunscreen. They tend to be easy to tolerate around the eyes, as is the case with this one. Now let's talk about the tint. The tint comes from iron oxides. We've come to learn that visible light from the sun plays a huge role in hyperpigmentation. Sunscreen active ingredients don't protect against that visible light, but tinted sunscreens, through the iron oxides, may offer protection against that piece."
Best Skincare For Combination Skin
"I cannot say enough good things about DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46. This is hands down one of the best sunscreens I have ever encountered and it gets a lot of thumbs up across comments and reviews from people that I've recommended it to. It's a hybrid sunscreen, so that means it has mineral actives and chemical actives, and I find these types of sunscreens are kind of a nice happy medium. They're not a no cast sunscreen but they're not as casty as an all mineral sunscreen. They also have chemical filter ingredients in them, but in contrast to many all chemical sunscreens, they're a little bit less likely in my experience to burn or sting sensitive skin. So I just find they're a nice happy medium. This particular product is for me a pleasure to use. This is like one of my all-time favorites. The tint on this is not orangey, it's not peachy."
Amazon Prime Day 2024 Skincare Deals NOT TO MISS
"I absolutely adore this tinted facial moisturizer. It's a hybrid sunscreen so it has zinc, it also has some chemical filters and offers broad spectrum protection. It's a very hydrating, lightweight, comfortable to wear formula. It does have niacinamide which in addition to being good for redness, dark spots, and moisture barrier is also an antioxidant which is ideal, and sun protection may help combat oxidative stress as it relates to not just ultraviolet radiation exposure from the Sun but also pollution, visible light, etc. It's tinted, so the iron oxides may be offering some protection against visible light which contributes to hyperpigmentation. Now this has a bit of an odd odor. It's fragrance-free but it smells in my opinion a bit like when you're blowing up a pool float. That does not linger. I actually have come to rather enjoy it."
SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR BLACKHEADS @DrDrayzday
"This is one of my favorite moisturizing sunscreens. This is a moisturizer and a sunscreen, which is important for many reasons. First of all, UV rays age your skin and actually contribute to blackhead formation by destroying the supportive framework around the skin. This one is tinted so it will help with hyperpigmentation too because of the iron oxides. This is moisturizing so it's going to help combat the dryness that might occur from salicylic acid and glycolic acid, and this is going to protect from sunburn, which is really important because the glycolic acid can make you more susceptible to a sunburn."
SUNSCREENS I LOVE & FINISHED UP 🗑
"The Tint Blends into the skin very well when I am wearing this sunscreen and using it on a daily basis is my everyday moisturizer with sunscreen for day-to-day use I see a noticeable difference in just the smoothness Luminosity of my skin while wearing this so it really is cosmetically a very nice formula everything Dermatology I've ever tried has been a win and I even had the opportunity actually to visit their Factory where they make this and go on a tour and that was really fun and this is one I buy over and over and over again this most recent bottle and the past few bottles I've actually purchased on Amazon so if you're an Amazon Shopper you can get it there it comes from them. The Dermatology one is a hybrid sunscreen so it has zinc and octinoxate in it it also has a tint so the tint comes from Iron oxides which may help in offering protection from visible light that could otherwise worsen hyperpigmentation especially for people who have medium to deep skin tones."
Skincare After A Rough Night | Vlog
"Their Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46 is so good. It has peptides which are also hydrating and may have an anti-inflammatory effect, seaweed extract which is super hydrating, and licorice root which calms down redness and is good for hyperpigmentation."
SUNSCREENS I HAVE BEEN LOVING & USED UP 😍 @DrDrayzday
"This is one of my absolute favorite tinted hybrid moisturizing sunscreens, it's the DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer. Please, please, please DRMTLGY, never ever discontinue this, I love it so much. I've probably gone through twenty bottles of this in my lifetime already. It's a hybrid sunscreen with zinc oxide and octinoxate, and it's become a holy grail tinted moisturizing sunscreen for many of you. It's not water resistant, so it's more of a day to day moisturizer with sunscreen kind of product. This is one I always go back to, I always have it in my rotation, I love it, I know what I'm going to get with it, it's comfortable to apply and it doesn't have any fragrance. It does have an odd odor, I have to warn you of that, I actually kind of find the odor a bit endearing, like a pool float, but that odor does not linger. It has niacinamide, which I love, but some people don't tolerate niacinamide, they find it burns and stings, so if that's you then this would not be a good sunscreen for you. I love the tint on this, it's not peachy, it's not orangey, it's very complimentary to my skin tone and to many others. Highly recommend this one, it's got to be my favorite product from them."
SUNSCREEN I USED UP 2022 👍🗑 Dermatologist @DrDrayzday
"This has to be one of my most repurchased sunscreen products, it's the DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46. It's a hybrid sunscreen, so it has mineral actives and chemical actives, and the tint is so wonderful for my skin tone because it's not orangey like a lot of tinted sunscreens end up being. It's hydrating, it's moisturizing, it's not greasy, it's a pleasure to apply, it doesn't go on streaky, and my skin just looks good when I'm using this. You can put makeup on over it, it doesn't peel, and it's a pleasure to use around the eyes, I have no burning or stinging and it doesn't seep into my eyes. This has to be one of my favorite moisturizers that happens to have sunscreen. It's not water resistant though, so I wouldn't rely on this if I'm going to be outdoors participating in sport or sweating a lot. It also has niacinamide, which may help with redness, hyperpigmentation, and give a little bit of additional acne control, and it's not greasy or shiny. Now the tint and the cast aren't going to be universally agreeable with everyone. If you have a very deep skin tone, this is probably going to leave a cast on your skin, that said many people with deeper skin tones have commented that this has become their holy grail and it doesn't leave a cast for them, so it's going to be very individualized. It does have a bit of an odd odor, I've come to rather enjoy it, I think it smells like a pool float, but it doesn't linger, it fades away very quickly, and there's no fragrance in it either, which I prefer very much."

BLACK FRIDAY SKIN CARE DEALS 2022 💰 DERMATOLOGIST @DrDrayzday
"I personally really love the DRMTLGY Universal Tint SPF 46 moisturizer. It's an everyday moisturizer with SPF, it's tinted, it stays on well, I call it my no-brainer daily sunscreen. It's great for days when you're mostly indoors because it's not water resistant, I wouldn't rely on it for sport or swimming, but it looks nice on the skin, I love it, it doesn't give that orangey hue, and it stays on well under makeup. It's more sheer than the color science product. It's a hybrid sunscreen with zinc and some chemical filters, tinted for some protection against visible light that can contribute to hyperpigmentation, and it has niacinamide, so if you're sensitive to that then skip this one. It does have an odd odor but that fades and doesn't linger. That's one of my favorite sunscreens, I use it pretty much daily."

SEPTEMBER 2022 MONTHLY FAVORITES & FAILS 😍 @DrDrayzday
"The Dermatology Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46 is a product I have loved for a long, long time, and it looks really good on a variety of skin tones. It's basically a facial moisturizer with sunscreen, a hybrid sunscreen with zinc and octinoxate, and it's tinted. This one, in my opinion, is not orange at all, it does not leave an orange hue, it's more of a light tan to creamy mocha tint and it blends into my skin well. It's also got niacinamide, which some people don't tolerate. I really like this as a daily facial moisturizer. I have to point out it has an odd odor akin to a pool float, but it's been a favorite of mine for a very long time."

"So many of you use this in place of a foundation, however I personally find it a little bit too warm for my skin tone. I'm about a Fitzpatrick one to two depending on the time of year and this is better for those with a skin tone closer to three or four."

"It gives your skin that skin-like look with a little bit of that glow to it, and blushes and bronzers sit really nicely on top of it. Concealer as well, you could totally put foundation on top of this if you really wanted to, but this is actually lovely on its own. I'm going to give this a 6.5 out of 10 only because the tint just isn't there. I can only wear this if I'm self-tanning, so it would be nice if they came out with some other options for shades because even if you have a darker skin tone this possibly may not even work. We need like a light, a medium, and a deep shade here. I just don't feel like this color is going to work for everyone."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Source: DermNet

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
