What the gurus are saying

Gurus consistently praise the serum's multi-pathway approach to hyperpigmentation and its hydrating, illuminating feel. Most highlight visible results on sun damage and melasma with consistent use and appreciate the refill packaging. The main criticism is price; one reviewer finds it expensive relative to competing brightening products and feels the refill quantity doesn't justify the cost, though acknowledges the formula itself is solid.

"This is the Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum and it has been impressive. I've spent serious time in the heat and the sun very recently and the pigmentation is dramatically calmer than it should be. And that really got my attention. I love that they come with these little refills so I don't have to keep buying the plastic case all the time, but by having two in here, it just keeps the product fresher. This has definitely survived the low-buy because I actually have it on a repeat order and it shows up every 3 months."

"This line targets different pathways in hyperpigmentation. When it comes to treating stubborn hyperpigmentation, you really need to have ingredients that work at different steps. Not only just blocking how pigment is made, but also blocking the transfer of pigment, as well as helping with skin turnover. This one does it. It targets multiple pathways, so great for post-acne marks, uneven skin tone from sun damage, or even if you struggle with melasma. Ingredient-wise, it's got alpha arbutin, kojic acid that helps reduce pigment formation along with niacinamide that blocks the transfer, and then more hydrating ingredients that help with hyperpigmentation products can be irritating. It's a lovely serum, really lovely to use, just all around a great product if you are struggling with uneven skin tone, looking for something that is backed by science, well-formulated, and really elegant."

"Another holy grail is the hyper serum by Dr. Idriss. This is for pigmentation. It has glycerin, super hydrating, but if you're working on pigmentation, this is a great serum. They come with two refills. So it's great. You get two fresh refills. And as you know, I travel with this all the time. It's kind of my one and done travel serum that I bring on the plane if I'm feeling kind of dry. It goes nicely over makeup for just a little highlight. Love this."

"I finally had a chance to try this and I thought it was expensive and I initially thought there'd be more of a refill with it but it's for what it is it's really expensive. You get one refill and then them added up together I think don't even equal a full ounce. There's lots of great brightening products out there that you don't need to spend a ridiculous amount. This isn't a bad product by any means but if you're looking for something brightening, this one's too expensive. I just wouldn't recommend it to the average person because there's some other great ones that are brightening without being overly expensive."

"The number one product within our Sephora picks for dark spots is my hyper serum. This is a powerhouse serum that comes with a refill for 68 bucks. Why is it a powerhouse? Because it has kojic acid, arbutin, licorice root, niacinamide, dioic acid, gallic acid in addition to the fact that it is hydrating upon application and it gives an instant glow. Now the instant glow doesn't mean that it's working instantly. It just gives you the oomph to keep carrying on because the name of the game is consistency."

"The hyper serum is like for me the best of all worlds because this is going to help to minimize the look of brown discoloration. There's also an ingredient in the hyper serum that reduces the look of redness and that is digosil galic acid. If you're using these during the day, make sure to apply the hyper serum at night. And if you're using these at night, make sure to apply the hyper serum during the day because it works really nicely together to get the red and the brown out of your face."
How to Get Glowing Skin! | Dr. Shereene Idriss
"My personal baby that I absolutely could not live without for me would be the Dr Idriss Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum because I have had melasma and I've kept it really calm at bay over the past two years. I haven't done a laser treatment since September 2022 and the way I think I've kept my melasma at bay is by being super consistent with an over-the-counter skincare routine. It has been the staple of my routine and has truly been one of these three products for my discoloration. I do think most people develop brown spots because we're out and about, we're living in the sun, you probably weren't wearing sunscreen when you were a kid and you're going to get them as you get older, and so you want to suppress how those appear over time."
✨NEW✨ from Dr. Idriss! How to Get an Even Skin Tone
"It is our best selling product and it is an award-winning product. If I had to choose a favorite, she would be it. I like her over makeup as well because it just gives this instant glow. I kind of sometimes use it as a highlighter, knowing that my skin is reaping the benefits. My melasma is really over here in the summer, but I use this over anything I put on my face. The hyper serum contains a bunch of actives that are going to even out your skin tone from salicylic acid, arbutin, licorice root, D-glucosamine gallic acid which can help with redness, glycerin, and it has a little bit of niacinamide not more than 5%. It is loaded with a bunch of other actives as well."
