What the gurus are saying
This serum works through rare high-dose kojic acid targeting pigmentation from multiple angles: blocking formation, preventing transfer, and boosting turnover. People with melasma and sun damage report real fading, though experts stress it takes three to six months minimum for results. The price is steep at $68 for roughly 1 ounce, which stops some, though repeat buyers say the included refills justify the cost.

"Kic acid is great. It binds to the copper ions in the tyrrosinase enzymes and then it prevents the enzyme from producing any melanin, which makes it a really great ingredient in skincare for hyperpigmentation and dark spots. So, this is the Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyper dark spot and hyperpigmentation treatment. The packaging is a little gimmicky, but the product itself is great. It also contains arbutin, niacinamide, and brightenyl, which seems to be a newer ingredient I'm starting to notice in more products."

Can Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyper Serum Really Fix Hyperpigmentation? Watch This Dark Spot Review!
"I've been testing it about six weeks or so, using literally one pump and focusing mostly on my forehead where most of my hyperpigmentation melasma is. For what this product promises, it's a brightening serum that fades the look of dark spots, discoloration, hyperpigmentation, and I would say this delivers on all three of those. I do believe it's helped brighten my skin up a bit since I started testing it out and adding it to my routine about six weeks ago. I think the winner ingredient in this is that Bright Now, with diglycolic gallic acid being the main star of the show. I've tried tons of other products with niacinamide, alpha arbutin, kojic acid, licorice, and they've all helped to some extent, but for me I think that Bright Now was the star of the show. I do think it's helped brighten up my forehead. The one thing I dislike about this is that I really don't like having mica and titanium dioxide in many products, especially ones I use at night. They're a colorant and I don't really care if my serum is pearlescent looking or not."
The Most Overrated Skincare Products! Overpriced? Ineffective? Better Alternatives?
"I finally had a chance to try this and I thought it was expensive and I initially thought there'd be more of a refill with it but it's for what it is it's really expensive. [...] You get one refill and then them added up together I think don't even equal a full ounce. There's lots of great brightening products out there that you don't need to spend a ridiculous amount. This isn't a bad product by any means but if you're looking for something brightening, this one's too expensive. I just wouldn't recommend it to the average person because there's some other great ones that are brightening [...] without being overly expensive."
Ranking Dermatologist-Founded Skincare Brands - Not All Derm Brands Are Created Equal
"The Dr. Idriss brand, founded by dermatologist Dr. Shireen Idriss focusing on clinical solutions for pigmentation, redness, and texture. I haven't had an issue with the products. I don't like the packaging of most of them. They're gimmicky, and I really hate them. This little serum which has a refill, it just seems like a waste of too much plastic packaging when it could have been packaged much more efficiently and superiorly than it is now."

"This is the Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum and it has been impressive. [...] I've spent serious time in the heat and the sun very recently and the pigmentation is dramatically calmer than it should be. And that really got my attention. [...] I love that they come with these little refills so I don't have to keep buying the plastic case all the time, but by having two in here, it just keeps the product fresher. [...] This has definitely survived the low-buy because I actually have it on a repeat order and it shows up every 3 months."

"This is a very lightweight daytime gel based lotion. It's thicker than a gel. I don't really go for gels, by the way. This is not the type of product that I would go for. I like heavy, rich creams. I have mature skin, I have dry skin, and I love this product. I have been using this every day since I got it. It also contains vitamin C, [...] so her idea is use fewer products that do more things. I like the form factor of this. I love the packaging as well, and I love the squish top. You're going to dispense just a little bit. I don't really think it's a gel, I think it's in between a gel and a lotion, it feels like an emulsion to me, [...] but this is nice, [...] it's very elegant. I never thought it would get me through the day, I just thought it's too light, but it does. I've been using that every day, but if you're putting it under a sunscreen, then you're also getting [...] a bit of moisture from there."
Over 50: I Don’t Rebuy Everything I Love
"The Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum sits in this space. This isn't a quick results product, it's part of a very committed pigment experimentation. Pigmentation is a newer target for me, especially heading into summer when my melasma can flare, so I've committed to at least six months using this one product. The texture is beautiful, it layers easily. I've opened a new one [...] and already reordered the backup, the replacement just arrived today. So this isn't necessarily permanent yet, but it's very deliberate."
I Can't Buy American Products Anymore
"This is Dr. Idriss's Major Fade Hyper Serum, the one I forgot to cancel before the new import rules came in. I love this product, I signed up for the refills and I would absolutely keep it up. It's great for tackling my melasma, it's easy to travel with, it feels so nice on the skin, but it's about to cost me a small fortune in fees when it lands in Ireland."
"This line targets different pathways in hyperpigmentation. [...] When it comes to treating stubborn hyperpigmentation, [...] you really need to have ingredients that work at different steps. Not only just blocking how pigment is made, but also blocking the transfer of pigment, as well as helping with skin turnover. [...] This one does it. It targets multiple pathways, so great for post-acne marks, uneven skin tone from sun damage, or even if you struggle with melasma. [...] Ingredient-wise, it's got alpha arbutin, kojic acid that helps reduce pigment formation along with niacinamide that blocks the transfer, and then more hydrating ingredients that help with hyperpigmentation products can be irritating. It's a lovely serum, really lovely to use, just all around a great product if you are struggling with uneven skin tone, looking for something that is backed by science, well-formulated, and really elegant."
"I love the Dr. Idriss Major Fade line, one of my favorite skincare brands, and I love her as a content creator. It is one of the only high dose kojic acid options you can find on the market."
"This is where the major fade hyper serum is a powerhouse because it has arbutin, licorice root, niacinamide. It even has diglycolic acid which helps to minimize the redness when it first appears and that eventually turns into the brown spots. But the thing I love the most about this is that it gives your skin an illuminating effect. So you look like you've used a highlighter obsessed. So it hydrates and it brightens and illuminates all in one."

Don’t Let These Skincare Myths Fool You… | Dr. Shereene Idriss
"I made Dr. Idriss Major Fade specifically for you guys. I simplified it for you so you could stick to it because consistency is what gives you results. It's a three-step system with ingredients like hydroquinone, KIC acid, arbutin, licorice root, vitamin C, and other antioxidants like glutathione and hexylresorcinol that help to minimize pigment and make sure that melanin doesn't get transferred out into the rest of your skin. You can find all of these ingredients minus the hydroquinone in this system, and it's a solid product with multiple actives at the right levels to really target your pigmentation."

"The major fade line is to target discoloration. And I didn't put azelaic acid in this line because to really get an effect for melasma or stubborn pigment, it should be at 15% or more. But if you have your melasma or hyperpigmentation or discoloration under control, you utilizing an azelaic acid from 0 to 10%, no one's going to use that. 0% you might as well not use it up to 10% is going to help to maintain your gains that you've already achieved."

"I personally did not include retinoids in my skincare line, Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum. Although retinoids are very important, the reason I did not include them in the lineup is because you must know the type and the percent of the retinoid you're using. To mix a retinoid in with other actives that are targeting a very specific problem is doing you a disservice, because you might tolerate a higher retinoid or you might not tolerate it at all, and you want to get the benefit of the other ingredients that are minimizing hyperpigmentation and discoloration."

Fall Nighttime Skincare Routine: Face & Body! | Dr. Shereene Idriss
"I go in with the hyper Serum by Dr. Idriss, again my brand I'm biased I love this product, this is probably my favorite one. I'm going to use six drops tonight because of my under eyes. This is loaded in kojic acid, arbutin, licorice di glucoside, gallic acid, it has niacinamide as well and it is great for inflammation, for minimizing the look of discoloration. As somebody who has melasma who cannot be using hydroquinone all the time, I like to use it on a daily basis to minimize how I make pigment so I don't hyperpigment or get an unwanted ugly flare up. The reason I put six drops is because I want to go underneath my eyes to make sure that this nastiness doesn't turn into a dark brown spot over time."
"This is where multi-ingredient stories are very interesting. Obviously I am biased and I own the brand, but the Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum by Dr. Idriss is a multi-ingredient story. I understand why it's tricky for you as the consumer, because you have to have an understanding of the brand and a good relationship and honestly trust with the brand to know that they're giving you ingredients not just at claim value but at actual levels of efficacy. So very honestly, the Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum is at higher levels, and if you're sensitive it may be too strong, but always worth a test and a patch test."
How to Fade Stubborn Dark Spots, Hyperpigmentation, from a Dermatologist! | Dr. Shereene Idriss
"The hyper serum is an important step in the routine because this is really attacking the melany from within and this particular product has a couple of key ingredients that you would probably want to incorporate in your routine as well alpha arbutin. Alpha arbutin is a very interesting ingredient because it inhibits the activity of tyrosinase it is a cousin of hydroquinone but it's not and it converts into hydroquinone but it is not hydroquinone. A lot of people ask me if it safe in pregnancy or not the reality is Alpha arbutin gets converted after it gets absorbed through your skin so depending on your body surface area how much you're using and how much actually gets converted the logical answer is probably not enough to be dangerous but nobody's ever going to do a test on a pregnant person to prove that so you make what you want out of that."

And if you're using these at night, make sure to apply the hyper serum during the day because it works really nicely together to get the red and the brown out of your face."
How to Get Glowing Skin! | Dr. Shereene Idriss
"My personal baby that I absolutely could not live without for me would be the Dr Idriss Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum because I have had melasma and I've kept it really calm at bay over the past two years. [...] I haven't done a laser treatment since September 2022 and the way I think I've kept my melasma at bay is by being super consistent with an over-the-counter skincare routine. [...] It has been the staple of my routine and has truly been one of these three products for my discoloration. [...] I do think most people develop brown spots because we're out and about, we're living in the sun, you probably weren't wearing sunscreen when you were a kid and you're going to get them as you get older, and so you want to suppress how those appear over time."
Best Skincare for Your 30s: Anti-aging, Oily Skin, Hormonal/Adult Acne & More! | Dr. Shereene Idriss
"If you're looking for a serum that can also brighten and hydrate and instantly illuminate your skin, that is why I created this. It also has arbutin in addition to the niacinamide, but it also contains kojic acid, which is crucial when you're talking about brightening your skin, especially if you have conditions such as melasma. You want to be incorporating these actives throughout the course of the year. This is a hydrating creamy serum, so you are going to get some hydration through this serum. But the other thing that I did intentionally with this is give it an instant illuminating effect because I wanted people to get motivated by the results that they're starting to see. Even though yes, it's not real in the sense that it's not working right away, nothing works right away when it comes to your skin, but I wanted people to get excited by this glow so that they could be consistent with their routine. It can also hydrate your skin in the process. So I tend to use this and double it up as an under eye cream."

[...] I use it both in the morning and at night, four clicks to my face every single day, and I have not missed a day since 2021 when I finalized that formula."

"It is our best selling product, it is an award-winning product, and quite frankly if I had to choose a favorite, she would be it. [...] I like her over makeup as well because it just gives this instant glow. I kind of sometimes use it as a highlighter, knowing that my skin is reaping the benefits. [...] My melasma is really over here in the summer, but I use this over anything I put on my face. The [...] hyper serum contains a bunch of actives that are going to even out your skin tone from salicylic acid, arbutin, licorice root, ellagic acid which can help with redness, glycerin, and it has a little bit of niacinamide, not more than 5%. It is loaded with a bunch of other actives as well. [...] Licorice root extract has been shown to help your skin, and there are other actives throughout the formula."

4 NEW WAYS To Reduce Dark Spots Over 50!
"I've been using this for 2 years and absolutely love it. It has ingredients that are different from the three that I tried. I've had great luck with this. The Dr. Idriss Major Fade has alpha arbutin, it also has kojic acid, diglucosamine gallic acid, and niacinamide. So if you're using another product in the evening I would use this in the morning because they both have niacinamide, unless you're not sensitive to niacinamide then you probably don't need to worry about it. Alpha arbutin is another tyrosinase inhibitor but it claims to be more gentle and not target the production of tyrosinase at the genetic level so you may want to give that a try. Diglucosamine gallic acid decreases inflammation."

"An all-time fave is the Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum by Dr. Idriss. I love the serum, it's always in my routine, it's my travel companion. It hydrates, it has pigment fighters, it also helps calm my redness. It has all the ingredients I need, kind of a one-and-done serum. If I'm just taking one serum with me when I travel, this is the one I take. This will definitely be in my skincare routine this winter because I use it as a maintenance serum for those particular three problems that I always have year round."

Makeup, Skincare & Supplements: Empties, Fails n' Favorites /Beauty Over 50
"I use the Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum for brightening, it has lots of brightening ingredients. I also use this when I want a very light moisturizer and I don't want to come in with a second moisturizer. This is my second or third empty of these, and it's super cool, it comes with a refill, you buy one, load it, and it comes with two of these. [...] It's a refillable container, you just load it and click it in, and when you're done you pull it out, toss that piece out, and you still keep the dispenser. [...] This has been on repeat for me. [...] It's a brightening and very moisturizing product, and [...] it just gives your skin a gorgeous glow."

"Another serum that I absolutely love that tackles pigmentation is the Dr. Idriss Major Fade Hyperpigmentation Serum. This has been a go-to of mine since launch. I absolutely love this. I carry this on the plane with me. It is the only skincare that I do on the plane. If my skin's feeling dry I just put it on, even over makeup, but this is fabulous for pigmentation. It has several pigment fighters: diglucos gallic acid which helps reduce redness, it also has kojic acid which helps reduce the dark look of dark spots, and alpha arbutin which improves the appearance of uneven skin tone, and niacinamide, the all-around goodie that the skin brightener. It helps with skin barrier protection and it also helps with the moisture barriers, so you're getting multiple ingredients in here that help with hydration, the look of fine lines, and decreased pigment. I always have one of these riding around in my purse and on my bathroom counter."
