  • Exfoliating beads feel unremarkable

What the gurus are saying

The bar cleanses effectively without drying or stripping the skin barrier, a quality dermatologists particularly praise for sensitive skin and those with eczema. The moisturizing formula sets it apart from traditional harsh soaps, and it rinses cleanly while leaving hydrating ingredients behind. One reviewer found the exfoliating beads subtle rather than transformative, though most gurus recommend it across body and face; those sensitive to fragrance can reach for the fragrance-free version, which performs just as well.

"I'm kind of at a stage now where I'm trying the different scents that they have. Typically for the longest time my go-to scent was the original one, the white and blue one. Very recently I tried the pink one, loved it. Went to the store recently, saw that they had the green one, the refreshing one. I got that as well. Dove also not as expensive as even the Dove shower gels."

"I use Dove and I love it. [...] It's so good for the skin. Like I've always used it and I loved it and I just feel like my tan really likes the hydration that it gives from that."

"The nice thing about the Dove Beauty Bar is that if you like the scent, provided you're not allergic to it, that's what's in the original, but the sensitive one is fragrance-free. This is gentle enough to adequately cleanse, but not disrupt skin's outermost pH to a point where it causes the enzymes there to be haphazard in terms of their function and not help with barrier integrity the way they need to. It also leaves behind moisturizing ingredients, so it cleanses and moisturizes at the same time. [...] I highly recommend this. It's great for you, and you can also use it to wash your hands. [...] These work really well for hand washing. Keep your eyes peeled because the Dove fragrance-free Beauty Bar often goes on sale for Black Friday."

"If you are allergic to fragrance, no worries. You have the Dove original Beauty Bar. This is great. You can use this on the face. I mean, it's underrated."

"This rinses off the skin really well. They have a 16 pack here for $18.49, so that's about 30, 31 cents per ounce. If you are not allergic to fragrance and you like the smell of Dove, you can also get the scented version."
Skincare Trends to Avoid in 2026, According to a Dermatologist
"A cleansing bar, like a Beauty Bar, it's mild and meant to remove dirt, bacteria, dead skin cells, but have minimal impact on the pH of your skin so as to not disrupt the skin barrier. It's a myth that these mild cleansing bars don't actually get you clean. They do. They have a surfactant in them that goes to work to take off that stuff and let it rinse down the drain. You don't need to add in an antimicrobial in there."

"Use a cleansing bar like Dove or a body wash rather than a true soap like Ivory soap or Irish Spring, for example, as these cleansing bars and body washes are not only formulated with moisturizing ingredients but also are formulated to be much gentler on the skin."
Cult Classics: Skincare Products That Have Stood the Test of Time
"Traditional soaps are actually pretty harsh on the skin. They're very drying. They disrupt the acidic pH of the skin barrier and that can lead to enhanced irritancy, redness. The Dove Beauty Bar is enriched with moisturizers. It was formulated with a creamy moisturizing cream. The Dove Beauty Bar does have a signature fragrance, but they make a fragrance-free version. This can be used to wash the face, the body. If you have eczema growing up, if you ever saw a dermatologist, there's a chance that maybe they told you you should be washing with Dove soap."

"A classic example of a syndet is the Dove Beauty Bar. Syndets are more neutral to acidic pH, so they don't disrupt the pH of your skin barrier, and a lot of them also have ingredients added that can be deposited on the skin surface for a moisturizing benefit."

"Dove has always had their classic Beauty Bar. They make one that's free of fragrance. It's moisturizing, it's not drying. Definitely a good option."

"Dove beauty bars are formulated to be used on the face. They have conditioning ingredients and a pH that's more amenable to the health of the moisture barrier. They're a fine option, not any better or worse than a gentle cleanser."

"If you use a Dove Beauty Bar, it's fine for your face because it's a cleansing bar with moisturizing ingredients."

"It wasn't just another soap. It was a gentler alternative that still cleaned your body and killed bacteria whilst also moisturising your skin at the same time. And although that sounds so basic now, it was actually the first of its kind and it helped position Dove as something closer to a beauty brand than a typical soap brand. They really leaned into that moisturising aspect of the product with all their ads focusing on the fact that their bars contained a quarter moisturising cream. [...] Dove was a modern, scientific and aimed at women specifically as a way of caring for themselves. Fans of the brand also love the strong fragrance that Dove added to their beauty bars."

"I'm not using any sort of fancy soap or anything like that. I'm just using a Dove bar soap and scrubbing my skin. That's how you get it to where your body and your skin is behaving the way that it did when it was younger. We had better circulation when it was younger. Our cell turnover was better when we were younger."

"I feel like that soap is going to dry you out leaving it on for 30 minutes"

"As a dermatologist I am on the Beauty Bar side, which is the use of synthetic detergents that you can use to cleanse. Many people don't know that there's a huge difference between synthetic beauty bars, like your Dove Beauty bars, and soap. If you see a Beauty Bar it never has the word soap on it. That's because soap by definition is when you use vegetable oils and combine with a base solution like lye, and then in a process called saponification it forms the soap. Synthetic or beauty bars don't meet that definition of soap, but they're much gentler on skin. They cleanse as well and they do not disrupt skin's natural pH, but your soaps tend to disrupt your skin pH. They turn to be more moisture stripping."

"The good part about Dove is that it's not drying, so even now I don't feel my skin is drying. It just feels like a regular face wash. It has these little mini beads and maybe that's why they call it exfoliating, and it is exfoliating, but it doesn't feel anything special."
~Yay
"Dove Beauty Bar uses Dey technology, which combines a gentle cleanser called sodium laurel isothionate, a mild synthetic surfactant compared to the harsher surfactants found in ordinary soaps. Because of this Dey technology, this Beauty Bar is able to create a creamy mild lather that doesn't strip your skin while it deposits skin natural moisturizers as you cleanse, so your skin is left feeling soft and hydrated. It uses skin identical fatty acids that restore moisture back to the skin so that your skin feels clean yet hydrated and supple. It's the perfect balance, and it's the number one derm recommended bar."

"The Dove Cream Beauty Bar looks like a soap but it's not actually a soap. It uses surfactants that aren't soap surfactants and it has a lower pH, which makes it fine for your face. If it doesn't break you out, this is actually one of the few bar soap-looking products you can use on your face without worrying."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
