What the gurus are saying

This mineral sunscreen earns praise for sitting invisibly on skin without white cast and absorbing quickly. It contains lavender, so those with extreme fragrance sensitivity may want to pass; people with rosacea or simplifying complex routines find it calming and protective. It's pricey.

"We've got this Dermalogica sunscreen which is a nice SPF 30 with high protection protects against UVA light and is primarily chemical in terms of its sunscreen so it will absorb very easily."

"This particular product from Dermalogica is actually fantastic. It's a physical sunscreen that doesn't leave a cast, which is really quite nice, and you can see that it absorbs into the skin really quickly and easily."

"Dermalogica used to make one of my favorite physical sunscreens, the SPF 30 Invisible Physical Defense, which is good. I would give it like an 8 out of 10 on the white cast scale. But this poor screen, I would give a 9 out of 10. The best part is that it's an SPF 40 and it literally has niacinamide, microalgae, and vitamin E that help to blur pores, help to reduce the sebum and the oil that my nose creates naturally, hydrate it with that algae, and then also help with any scarring and irritation with that vitamin E. This is fantastic. I can use this all over my face, but my biggest issue with this sunscreen is how tiny it is. I wish this came in a jumbo bottle and this is a little bit expensive, but holy guava only, I would pay five times the amount for this for a tube five times as big. This is also completely mineral, so I can literally put it on and practically in my eyes without irritation. For me, because I do want to keep my cost and budget down, this is so perfect to apply to the middle of my face and my sensitive eye areas."

An Easy Rosacea Skincare Routine
"This one is nearly invisible from Dermalogica. It's expensive but boy is it good. This is the SPF 30 Invisible Physical Defense. This one does have lavender in it so be aware of that, but I absolutely love this and this is great for rosacea."
I Burned My Skin Off Then Fixed It. How To Train Your Face This Year
"This is the one that I used, it's from Dermalogica, it is their Invisible Physical Defense. This is physical but this also has lavender oil. For those coming from the traditional world of using a ten-step skincare routine or feeling overwhelmed, this works for me. Just be aware that if you're the type of person where even water burns your face, I wouldn't recommend this, even though it's mineral, because it does have lavender in it. You want to get something that is completely fragrance-free. But for those who are coming from using like a ten-step skincare routine, this is a good option."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
