What they liked

  • Hydrating and protective with ceramides
  • Lightweight feel on application

What they flagged

  • Moisture fades within one to two hours
  • Needs frequent reapplication throughout the day

What the gurus are saying

One guru finds it genuinely hydrating and protective, reliably better than plain petroleum jelly and worth the repurchase. However, another expert who tested it for two months found the moisture faded within one to two hours, requiring frequent reapplication throughout the day, which felt impractical despite appreciating how nice it felt going on. Those with very dry lips may tolerate the reapplication, but anyone looking for lasting hydration through the day or night may want to consider something with stronger staying power.

"I use this one a lot when I was filming my videos. I'd say I tested it out for like a good two months. I even used it while I was traveling on the airplane everywhere. And while it wasn't a terrible formula like most COSRX products, I just wasn't super satisfied. I felt nice when I was applying it, but the moisture wouldn't last like any longer than one or two hours from my experience. I would say I had to reapply this one like seven to ten times a day, which might seem like a lot, but for my dry ass lips it really isn't. But I still don't want to be reapplying a lip product seven to ten times a day. So for that reason I will put it in mid, which makes me very sad because I really had high hopes for that product."

"It is the COSRX Lip Sleep Ceramide Lip Butter Sleeping Mask. It is nighttime right now and this is a good time to use it. One thing you should know about me I have perpetually dry lips I have to apply so much lip balm throughout the day it's actually insane. I think it's because between filming work meetings managing my team I'm just constantly talking so I think it just puts a lot of stress on my lips and keep in mind I'm in Hawaii right now just imagine how bad it is for me when I go to dry places like Colorado or Arizona oh it's a never-ending battle I swear I put in like part-time hours just applying lip balm."

"This is the lip sleep mask, and I've never repurchased it because it's not a perfect match for me, though I do respect what it is. It's more of a hydrating lip mask, and very few lip masks are made to target hydration, they're more emollient and occlusive. That might be a perfect pick for you if you have dehydrated lips, but personally I prefer a more occlusive lip balm, so it's another one of those products where I respect it for being different, it's just not a perfect match for my needs."

Cosrx Is ON SALE & Here's What To Buy
"Lip masks are always viral, they're always trending. Do not sleep on their Lip Sleep Ceramide Lip Butter. I've been using this same jar nightly almost a year now and I'm not even anywhere near close to finishing it, so it's great value because you don't need much. This particular product, in contrast to some of the other more popular lip sleeping masks, is free of fragrance and flavorant. It stays on the lips really well. I will apply it at night but sometimes I like to apply it in the morning as part of my morning skincare routine, and then later when I do my makeup, lip care products, lip glosses and things go on hydrated, moisturized lips so much better. It has shea butter and coconut oil, which is a great ingredient for dry skin including chapped lips. It also has ceramide, a lipid naturally found in skin's outermost barrier, which when you have dry skin or chapped lips, levels of that start to decline. Applying it exogenously can help boost your skin's own ceramide production. And it also has castor oil and argan oil that is quite viscous, hydrating, moisturizing. I love it. It is underrated, flies under the radar."

"It's not bad, it's a lot waxier though. It does help with dry, cracked lips. Honestly, it's not bad. Is it the best lip product? No. But I like it, I'll continue to use it, and it's not been bad."

"This COSRX Lip Sleep Ceramide Lip Butter Sleeping Mask is another one I keep using. I have not, like, I use this all the time. I'm about, I still have a good 2/3 left. I swear, I much prefer this to the Laneige one."

"I've been using the COSRX Lip Sleep Ceramide Lip Butter Sleeping Mask and this has been pretty good if I do say so myself. You know I always prefer plain petroleum jelly but this is not bad at all. This is like a much better alternative. It's kind of hard to get it out with your finger but it's nice and thick. In contrast to petroleum jelly this is a little more sticky. Apply on the lips and leave it on overnight, use it throughout the day for smooth moisturized lips. It works well. I've really been enjoying this one."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
