What the gurus are saying

This sunscreen doesn't pill or gum up under makeup, even thick foundation, making it a standout choice for makeup wearers and separating it from typical sunscreen-moisturizer hybrids. Gurus split on fragrance: some note a strong scent while others detect no smell at all. Beyond makeup compatibility, it earns praise for a hydrating, lightweight texture that can work year-round for both dry and oily skin.

"I will always have a soft spot for this sunscreen because it was one of the very first Korean sunscreens I used. That said, looking back at the formula now, I don't really love it. I really dislike how much fragrance is in it, which is bizarre because so many of this brand's other products are fragrance free. The rest of the formula doesn't particularly stand out and it's kind of heavy on the skin."

The BEST Sunscreens of 2023
"It's a Korean sunscreen and it's only $7, freaking dollars, that is absolutely insane, the most affordable sunscreen for such a high quality experience. I always have this one with me because the formula is so lightweight, it's a gel consistency that quickly absorbs into the skin with absolutely no white cast, and it has a great ingredient list with propylene glycol to moisturize the skin, niacinamide to help support the skin's barrier, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and green tea also for soothing redness and sensitivity. But the reason I included this product is because of the experience. It's one of those products that when you apply it to the skin you're like, how is this a sunscreen? I feel like in the US we're all collectively traumatized by the typical experience of applying a thick heavy white sunscreen on our face, and this could not be more so the opposite with its gel texture, lightweight consistency, and fast absorbing ability. The main reason I love recommending it is because it is so affordable. I mean $7, you just can't beat that price point. It really is awesome."

"The COSRX SPF 50 sunscreen formula is super affordable, it's a Korean sunscreen that works really well. We tried that product out and it's amazing, it feels so lightweight on your skin. It's one of my personal favorites, I actually recommended it in my best sunscreens of 2022 video."

"It feels very light, it says ultra light so it should be ultra light right. I like it a lot and it literally has no smell at all there's no chemical smell, there's no herbal smell, there's no floral smell, there's no smell at all so I like that. And it feels really just like a lotion, feels like a moisturizer with maybe a little bit of sunscreen so feel super light. SPF 50 PA with four pluses on it which is the highest you can get. It looks really nice and not greasy at all."

"This is one of the very first K-beauty sunscreens I use that I was like, wow, this is different. This isn't like my Piz Buin, like Nivea face and body sunscreen like all those years ago. And it's the first sunscreen that I was like, this is just a moisturizer. It feels like just a moisturizer. And I'll be really happy to use this every single day. My skin has changed a little bit since four or five years ago when I first reviewed this. And whilst this isn't heavy heavy, it's actually a lot lighter than I remember it being. I still use this in the drier areas where I'm not so oily because it does have a more kind of standard moisturizing feel. It's not too light and not too heavy. Actually dried down very nicely and kind of left an almost matte, silky smooth feeling. And not in the horrible primer way, but in a nice kind of soft skin way. The key ingredient in here is Aloe. Nice and soothing. Also very, very hydrating. So again, you do get that more moisturizer than sunscreen feeling with this. And the smell of it is very lightly fragranced, but more in that kind of like soft, Aloe kind of scent. I feel like this is going to be a nice Winter sunscreen."

"I bought this after a subscriber said Korean sunscreens were better than Japanese sunscreens, and this opened me to a whole new world of non-greasy, non-sticky, non-beach smelling sunscreens. It has a moisturizing texture and is slightly heavier than a standard chemical sunscreen, which is ideal for people with dry or oily skin. The key focus is the aloe ingredient because it's hydrating and soothing, plus glycerin. It feels very basic in a very necessary way. This is a sunscreen that can double as a moisturizer in the truest form, with a level of hydration I haven't tried in other sunscreen-moisturizer hybrids. Compared to other options, this is just like your hydrating, moisturizing moisturizer with the added benefit of sun protection. I love this; it's a cult favorite for a reason and a bestseller for a reason. It doesn't give you a dewy glow or hydrated-looking finish, but it settles on the skin quite well, and in summer that's absolutely fine. For both oily and dry skin types, you can wear this all year round as your moisturizer and sunscreen."

"This is the COSRX Aloe Soothing Sunscreen. It's an SPF 50 PA++++++++ and this one says it is formulated with aloe extract, butylene glycol, and the sunscreen protects skin against UVA and UVB rays while hydrating skin. What's amazing about this is that it doesn't pill. You could use this over a moisturizer and under a foundation, or you could use this in place of a moisturizer, but this one does not gum up. I had to try a lot of sunscreens to find ones that work under foundation. This one is a dream. It doesn't flash back. It works well under the thickest of foundations or the thinnest. And on top of that, it actually has ingredients that support the skin. It has glycerin, silica, and sulfonic acid. These can be very hydrating, and especially that silica gives us a nice slip, but it doesn't ball up no matter what you apply. And if you are someone who wears makeup every day, or if you haven't been able to wear sunscreen every day, even though SPF is your BFF, it just doesn't work under your makeup, and makeup has kind of been there for you when sunscreen hasn't, trust me, I understand. This is one that actually works."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
