    What the gurus are saying

This tinted mineral sunscreen earns consistent praise for blending beautifully without a white cast and delivering real broad-spectrum protection through its iron oxide content, which dermatologists say is especially valuable for anyone with hyperpigmentation or melasma. The formula is moisturizing and easy to apply without irritating eyes, though it carries a luxury price tag. It comes in multiple shades and finishes, including a bronzed version for a sun-kissed look.

"My favorite refind in the mineral category has been Colorescience. This is their original Sunforgettable. Love this mineral sunscreen. I had totally forgotten about it and retried it again this year. It is moisturizing. It is a mineral sunscreen, non-irritating and SPF 50."

"The Colorscience mineral sunscreen has been an all-time favorite for me. This is SPF 50 PA4 pluses and it does have a slight tint. It's one of the few tinted mineral sunscreens that really looks nice on my skin. It blends in beautifully. I had kind of forgotten about it and I decided to retry it this year in search of a tinted mineral sunscreen because I have been so stuck on untinted. This is an all-time favorite, highly recommend. If you're looking for a slightly tinted sunscreen and you don't mind a little bit of glow, you're going to love this. I actually am going to buy their untinted one. I haven't used that in ages, but as I remember, I really like that too, and it hardly left any white cast."

"This is a very lightweight sunscreen and I've never had issues. It's honestly one of the best tinted sunscreens I've ever used because it looks realistic. It looks skin-like. If you just want that light to medium coverage, then this is where you could stop. Or you could just keep applying more if you have more problem areas in terms of discoloration or redness. I like when my freckles and my imperfections still shine through because it just keeps my skin looking fresh and skin-like and it just gives that perfect no makeup makeup look. Using a tinted sunscreen just allows your skin to breathe a lot more, especially in the summer months."

"I really like Colorescience SPF 50. It's a tinted sunscreen. It's ideally mineral because it's zinc oxide which is anti-inflammatory, and it has to be reef safe with no other irritants in the product."

"This is a top luxury sunscreen pick of mine, but they are expensive when it is full price. I know you've seen me mention this one in several of my videos over time on my channel. This one has a really good concentration of iron oxides in it, which is going to help give you full spectrum UV protection, and that's especially important for people with hyperpigmentation or melasma. So this is a really good option. They actually have several different types of their Unforgettable line. This is their Face Shield. It is tinted and comes in one shade. Then they have the Glow, which gives you a nice glowy finish. And then there is the Flex, which comes in four shades and really can blend into several different kind of shade ranges."

"These are really great, tinted all mineral. They are really great because they give you good protection and iron oxides, which are great for melasma prone skin. I think they come in several shades. They blend in quickly so easy to wear. They are a little more pricey. I do not use it like as my number one every day because they get expensive. But you can almost always always find these for 25 maybe 30% off during sales of the year. I love to wear this on no makeup days where I just want a nice little glowy look."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

    Source: DermNet

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
