What the gurus are saying

This tinted mineral sunscreen earns consistent praise for blending into skin without leaving a white cast, especially when shaken well before use and given time to absorb. Gurus highlight its elegant, buildable coverage that reads almost like a lightweight foundation or BB cream, its fragrance-free formula, water resistance, and the thoughtful touch of visible-light blocking iron oxides to help with hyperpigmentation and melasma. One caveat: the tinted version can leave a white cast on deeper skin tones if not chosen carefully, so those with darker complexions may want to test shades first or consider mixing multiple shades together for a custom match. Some find it greasy if applied heavily, so many use it layered over another sunscreen rather than alone.

"The one I feel is best for me is the Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50, and I [...] use the untinted version. [...] I shake it before applying and use the two finger rule, sometimes applying more in the summer months when I'll be outside for a long period of time. [...] Once it's blended in, believe it or not, it does not leave a white cast on my skin tone. [...] This really has a beautiful formulation. I only use mineral sunscreens, not chemical, because chemical sunscreens tend to really irritate my skin, so I try to stay away from them as much as possible."

5 SKINCARE PRODUCTS THAT KEEP MY SKIN LOOKING FRESH FOR SPRING & SUMMER- GET COMPLIMENTS EVERY TIME!
"I really love the Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield, the Flex line, which is tinted. There are four shades to pick from. I have it in the shade fair and medium, and there's two deeper shades than medium. I generally have to mix fair and medium together to get a custom shade because medium is a little bit too dark for my skin tone right now, but come summer I can get away with just medium and maybe one drop of the fair to tone down the darkness of it, and in the winter I'll do more fair with maybe one or two drops of medium to give a little bit more color. Tinted sunscreens are a nice thing to use come spring and summer because they're more lightweight on the skin, they don't give that heavy makeup look, it keeps your skin looking super fresh and youthful, plus you're getting that sun protection. This is all mineral, with a zinc oxide of 12%."
IF I COULD ONLY PICK 1 PRODUCT FROM MY FAVORITE SKINCARE BRANDS | THIS WAS REALLY HARD!
"The next brand is Colorescience, and my favorite product from this brand has to be the Flex line. This is exceptional, the best tinted sunscreen I have ever used, truly. I have the medium shade, I have the fair shade, I generally mix the two if I'm in between shades. For the summer months I'm strictly medium, in the winter I'm mainly fair with a couple of drops of the medium. This helps to even out your skin tone, it adds that nice color and it gives a glowing complexion. It's an SPF 50, water and sweat resistant up to 40 minutes, it's all mineral, and it is beautiful. I've actually been using this as my foundation for the last couple of months, I haven't touched my It Cosmetics CC cream, I haven't touched any of my foundations, this has been my go to. I have more of the medium on today with maybe two drops of the light, and it just gives this perfect glowing complexion. Again, it slightly evens out your skin tone. Is it full coverage? No, you could possibly build it up to that if you put a lot of sunscreen on, but I would say this is more of that light to medium coverage, and then of course I will put blush on top, sometimes bronzer. I just love the complexion that I get when I use this. It comes out white, but when you are applying it to your skin..."
8 HOLY GRAIL ANTI-AGING SKINCARE PRODUCTS I'D PAY DOUBLE FOR | THEY REALLY ARE THAT GOOD!
"Next up is the Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex. This is a tinted sunscreen, and it's the only tinted sunscreen that I use because it's the only one that actually looks realistic on my skin, and it's the only one that I will use to replace my foundation with because this gives medium to full coverage, and I really love how this gives that nice radiance to the skin as well. There are several shades to pick from. I am generally shade medium in the summer, like when I have my self-tan going on and I'm at my darkest, I wear medium and it's perfect. In the winter I will wear fair, most of it being fair, with maybe one or two drops of medium in the fair just to give more color, because fair is actually too fair when I'm at my fairest. So I like to have that medium on hand just to add a little bit of color, because I don't bring tinted sunscreens down my neck, I don't want it to transfer onto clothing. So I really try to figure out a way I can make my tinted sunscreen work without having to bring it down my neck, and this is amazing. This is all mineral with an SPF 50, it is broad spectrum with a PA+++++, and it's water and sweat resistant up to 40 minutes, and it has a zinc oxide of 12%. Now they did come out with a new shade, which is shade light, which would be in between these two shades."
6 ANTI-AGING SKINCARE PRODUCTS I'M LOVING FOR 2023 | THESE WORK AND I AM SO IMPRESSED!
"I really love this sunscreen, and this one is one of my favorites because not only does it help to color correct, it does help to even out your skin tone. It's great for those no makeup days, just something to even out your skin, just to add a little bit of color. But also if you're someone that wears makeup on an everyday basis, then this is exceptional underneath your makeup. This acts as a makeup primer, I'm telling you, your makeup looks flawless on top of this. I feel like if I have any areas that look like my pores are a little bit enlarged, this does a good job to blur it out, so when I have my makeup on top, my foundation and everything else, my skin looks very airbrushed. [...] This is an SPF 50, it has a PA plus plus plus, it's also water resistant up to 40 minutes, and it has a zinc oxide of 12 percent, so it's 100 percent mineral. This does come in four shades, [...] and this is actually quite nice because it comes out white and as you apply it to your skin you do see that color transfer."
BEST SKINCARE PRODUCTS TO USE UNDER MAKEUP | SERUMS, MOISTURIZERS & SUNSCREEN "AS MAKEUP PRIMERS"
"The last product is a sunscreen, the Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield, the Flex line, which comes in four different shades. It's 100% mineral with an SPF 50, water resistant up to 40 minutes, has a PA+++, and a zinc oxide of 12%. I have it in the shade fair and also in the shade medium, so when I'm at my fairest I'll use the fair, and during the summer or when I'm self-tanning I'll use the medium, and sometimes I'll even mix the fair and the medium together if I'm in between shades, and I feel like that works really well. This will help to even out your skin tone, it helps to reduce redness if you have that uneven skin tone, but it also acts as a beautiful makeup primer, so you get that longevity with your makeup. You also get this nice radiance, nothing too crazy, not super glowy and dewy, but you do get this radiance so it just looks like your skin but better. It also gives that blurring effect to the skin, so when I put my foundation on top a lot of the pores that I may have look blurred out, so this really does help to reduce on that."
12 AMAZING MINERAL FACE SUNSCREENS | TINTED & NON-TINTED FORMULAS THAT WORK UNDER MAKEUP! APPROVED✅
"This is truly one of my favorite formulas here. This is the Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield in the Flex line. I have it in the shade Medium, but I also have it in the shade Fair. When I'm at my fairest, I use this one, and when I'm a little bit darker, the Medium one seems to blend really nicely. This one has an SPF 50 with PA++++, and it's water resistant up to 40 minutes. It comes out white, but as you apply it all over your skin, it helps even out your skin tone and gives your skin that nice color, really helping reduce any redness that you may have. I feel this works really well on its own, but when you pair it with your foundation, if you decide to, this acts as a makeup primer. Your skin looks so flawless when you have this underneath it, almost giving a blurring effect. When I use this, I don't use much foundation at all. I might just use a little bit to add to certain sections for more coverage."
8 AMAZING MINERAL FACE & BODY SUNSCREENS 2025 | TINTED/ NON-TINTED FORMULAS THAT WORK UNDER MAKEUP!
"This has an SPF 50, broad spectrum with a PA++++, and it's water and sweat resistant up to 40 minutes. This also has a zinc oxide of 12%. [...] This is usually my foundation replacement for the summer, and sometimes I will even eliminate foundations in the winter and use this instead. This actually does a very good job to eliminate redness, to actually even out your skin tone. The more you apply, the darker you will become, the more coverage you will get. With this brand I use shades fair and medium, and I mix them together depending on skin tone. In the summer I'm usually strictly medium, and this is the color that I am now starting to wear consistently. But in the winter I am more fair, and I might add one or two drops of medium just to give myself more color, because fair on its own is a little bit too fair when I'm at my fairest. Colorescience has come out with a new shade, shade light, which is in between fair and medium, but I haven't been able to get my hands on that yet."
EVERYDAY SUNSCREEN MAKEUP LOOK | NO MAKEUP MAKEUP TUTORIAL WITH TINTED SUNSCREEN
"I've been loving the Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50. It's mineral with a zinc oxide of 12%, and it's water and sweat resistant up to 40 minutes. This line comes in six shades now, so they have released a light shade as well as a rich deep shade. I wear shade medium when I'm at my darkest, especially in the summer. [...] In the winter, I'm mainly fair with a few drops of medium just to give more color, because [...] fair is actually too fair when I'm at my fairest in the winter. So I do like to have that medium on hand just to add a couple of drops to give some color where everything blends to my neck. I [...] apply a few drops into the palm of my hand [...] and then apply it to my skin in sections. It goes on white, but then it just adapts to your skin tone once you get applying it everywhere. I do go a little bit underneath my eyes with this."

"This wasn't the winner in any of my sunscreen testing videos but it was a runner-up and I've always kept this in the rotation. This is one of the ones that I like to use as a layering sunscreen if I put on something under that has a white cast that's a little bit too light. I can put this on over the top that will just even out the skin tone and even out the white cast and make me look a little less ghostly. I found this one to be too greasy and too wet feeling. This is an SPF 50 with a PA+++ rating so it's got really robust UVA protection and it's also 40 minutes water resistant so you can wear this one to the beach."

Travel Skincare Tips!
"The first one is my Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection sunscreen. This was the winner in my recent sunscreen video this year and this is a beautiful sunscreen. It is tinted. Everything that I bring is tinted so that when I'm wearing sunscreen like at the beach I don't put on makeup and since it's tinted I can just reapply my sunscreen and it helps my skin to look a little bit better, my skin tone to look a little even, hides my redness and I don't have to put on makeup. It helps make it easier to reapply my sunscreen after a couple of hours. I can wear these whether I'm touring around a city or if I'm going to the beach because they are forty minutes water resistant."

"This is the Colorescience Face Shield Flex. I think this is such an incredible tinted sunscreen. It comes in, I think, five shades. I have always mixed the fair and the medium shades because I change colors a little bit if I have a fake tan or if I have accidentally a little bit of a real tan, and I like to make sure I can get a perfect match. They have said you can mix their formulas together. In general, you should not mix your sunscreens together, especially if they're from different brands and they're different formulas, but these you can mix. They do have a light version as well which sits right in between. There are a lot of days that I wear zero foundation and zero concealer, and this is often when I'm in clinic and I will just have my normal sunscreen on and then just a little dab of this. I'm not getting a lot of SPF protection from this, but I am getting some blue light protection which would be relevant if you have a deeper skin tone, but more so it's just giving a really nice makeup effect. They are fantastic."

Dermatologist's Favorite Skincare Products of 2023! Vitamin C Serum, Sunscreens, & More
"This is a pure mineral or physical sunscreen, SPF 50. What I really want to make very clear here is I'm not using this as my only form of sunscreen. It is so tinted and so pigmented that the way I really love to use this is on top of my regular sunscreen because if I apply a full quarter teaspoon of this, I feel like it's a little bit too thick and it doesn't have the finish that I like. But I use it on top of other sunscreen not only to act as a second sunscreen layer but also to make my skin tone more even and more luminous. I use this as my foundation way more than I actually wear foundation or any type of other skincare or complexion product. I actually like to mix two shades of this, the two lightest shades which I think are fair and medium. I pretty much combine those in a 1:1 ratio but I can play with that a little bit depending on if I'm wearing a fake tan or if it's the dead of winter and I'm pale pale pale. I probably take about a fingertip of each shade and I mix them together in my hands first and then I sort of start blending it on the middle of my face where I have the most redness and discoloration and then blend it towards the periphery. I cannot tell you how many compliments I get when I wear this."

"I already used Colorescience but now these are the more tinted versions, the Flex. I use the light and the medium and I kind of mix them one to one, a little bit goes such a long way. I don't really use these as sunscreen, I'm using it sort of as like my foundation for today."
Dermatologist Shares Best Mineral Sunscreens for Your Skin! (Tinted & Untinted) | Dr. Sam Ellis
"The original is a very light peachy tint with a very light shimmer and then the flecks are much more heavily pigmented. This is perhaps my most worn combo of sunscreen. So for a long time before they came out with the flex I used the color science original on its own under makeup, one they came out with the flex I started combining them, so I would either layer the original and put the flex on top or I'd actually mix them. The way I like to apply this is put one full layer of the original color science on my skin that's really serving as my protective layer and then I mix in equal parts a little bit of the fair shade of the face shield flex and the medium shade and that's what gives me really good coverage. This is probably one of my favorite ways to wear makeup in the summer but still be super super protected. I think if you try to wear the flex on its own and you're actually using the proper amount or a quarter teaspoon of product for your face it's going to be too thick and too heavily pigmented so that's why I really like to layer this with the other color science sunscreen. I also like that these are water and sweat resistant. If I was going to a pool party and I actually wanted to look cute this combo of sunscreens is what I would wear."

"This is the Colorscience, their original formula, so it's tinted but it doesn't really offer any coverage. The tint is there to minimize the white cast that a lot of mineral sunscreens can have. This is really nice under makeup too. Sometimes it looks a little bit pink going on but I find that it doesn't leave any cast whatsoever on my skin. It's one of my favorite mineral sunscreens."

"I really love is a tinted mineral sunscreen. I recommend Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50. This is a 100% mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide, but it's tinted. What's really cool is that the color will kind of blend into your skin tone once you let it absorb, so it really leaves no white cast. I believe it's also water resistant, up to 40 or 50 minutes. This is a great one because in addition to the tint that blocks against visible light that contributes to hyperpigmentation, so if you struggle with melasma or hyperpigmentation, this is a must. It also contains niacinamide that helps to support our skin barrier and helps to brighten dull complexion, along with bisabolol which is derived from chamomile that's soothing and calming. The tint is kind of like a medium coverage, almost like a light tinted moisturizer or a light foundation. In the summer time, if I want some coverage but don't want to feel like I'm wearing a full face foundation, I'll go in with a first pass non-tinted sunscreen and then layer this on top to provide some additional protection but also pigment and coverage. This is a great one if you're looking for a light medium coverage that's tinted but is still very elegant, not heavy but offering great protection."

"I immediately fell in love with their Sunforgettable Face Shield, but they later came out with a newer product called the Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex and I have used this product a lot this year. What it is is a tinted mineral sunscreen that comes in four different shades. It's a mineral sunscreen that comes out white, but as you rub it in, the tint starts to come out and bloom. What I like about this formula is that it is very aesthetically pleasing and cosmetically elegant, spreads on the skin well, and also offers a touch more cosmetic camouflage in comparison to a lot of other tinted sunscreens. It's kind of almost like a BB cream or a step underneath a full coverage foundation. You do get pretty decent coverage with this and it is buildable. The nice thing about this formula is that it is fragrance-free, which I love. It's water resistant, which I also love, so this is great if you live in a humid climate or you're participating in sports outdoors, as it ensures better adherence to the skin."

"I love the Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex, I've been using it a lot again lately, it's one of my favorites. I'm in the shade medium, and what I like about this particular sunscreen is it comes out white but as you rub it in the pigment starts to appear and blend into the skin. It's water resistant up to 40 minutes, for me personally it leaves no cast, though if you have a deeper skin tone I do think these sunscreens will leave a cast. It doesn't leave an orangey hue behind and the coverage is quite good, somewhere between a sheer tinted moisturizer and a full-blown foundation, so it provides good cosmetic coverage if you have dark spots or redness to camouflage."

Black Friday SKIN CARE DEALS 2021 from Skinstore.com @DrDrayzday
"I reviewed this new line from Colorescience earlier this year over the summer, their Face Shield Flex mineral sunscreens that are tinted, and I rather enjoy these. They come in shades fair, medium, tan, and deep. They're an all-mineral tinted sunscreen that offers broad spectrum UV protection from UV rays that damage the skin, but they also offer protection from visible light and blue light, which for people hoping to clear hyperpigmentation is very important, since blue light from the sun can generate free radicals and drive early onset and more stubborn hyperpigmentation. Colorescience has demonstrated that this product does in fact protect from those wavelengths. However, the pigments on these sunscreens are not going to work for everyone. People who have a deeper skin tone, some people with deep skin tone rave about these whereas other people are let down. I wish I could say for sure that these would work for you or any tinted mineral sunscreen, but until I feel confident that more people of deeper skin tones work well with these, I can't make that promise."
Yay
"I love color science because it comes in different shades so it's a SPF 50 really high UVA protection but it blocks out your visible light which is really important. It's called something like Flex, it comes in a bit like a medicate tube with a little pump and it goes on as a cream or fluid. The reason they're tinted is because iron oxide has a rusty red appearance which doesn't look good on anyone so if you put a tint in it becomes more cosmetically acceptable."
Yay
"Another really good one that helps you fake a makeup look with no makeup is from Colorescience. That one's a really thick one. If you have rosacea or redness, oh my god, that is basically foundation in a sunscreen. It covers everything."

"This is another option for a tinted mineral sunscreen. It goes on a little bit lighter on the skin in terms of the color of the product but it also comes in other shades too which is great so you can find one that works for you. It goes on really nicely, kind of just blends nicely and feels really nice on the skin. I love wearing this product if I'm going to be getting all dressed up and putting a lot of makeup over it. I think it wears really well under the makeup. It has mineral filters like I mentioned but also has iron oxides which are very important in a sunscreen option."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
