What the gurus are saying

This brush-on mineral powder makes SPF reapplication over makeup practical throughout the day, especially for controlling shine in humid months without replacing a base sunscreen. However, at $69, some find the price hard to justify for what amounts to a supplemental product.

"The Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush On Shield SPF 50 is not a foundation, but it earns its place in this category because it's one of the most practical SPF touch-up tools available. It's a mineral SPF in a brush format that you can use over makeup throughout the day. I like it as a reapplication. If you're somebody who applies SPF in the morning and never reapplies, this removes that excuse."

"The Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50 is a tinted sunscreen powder. It's not the most protection in the world and it doesn't replace sunscreen, but it's a great addition to help control oiliness on your face, especially in more humid months, while getting some reapplication of minimal sun protection. But the price point, it's sixty nine dollars, and I can't justify that. As much as I want to try this product, I can't justify it, especially because it doesn't replace the actual sunscreen in your routine, you have to use it alongside one, so on its own it's not going to serve much benefit. Given that it's kind of a negligible item you don't necessarily need in your routine, that's very pricey. I'm gonna trust that people's experience with it has been great, but I'm gonna pass."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
