What the gurus are saying

Gurus agree coconut oil has legitimate research backing its use as a moisturizer, especially for eczema and compromised skin barriers, where it reduces water loss and bacterial colonization. The split: it works well for very dry skin and eczema but is too heavy and comedogenic for acne-prone or oily skin types, risking breakouts and hyperpigmentation. Concerns also include rancidity risk and the extra washing damage needed to remove it from hair.

"Coconut oil contains lauric acid making it good for reducing infection for cuts especially in humid countries and humid climates. It's also a heavy emollient making it useful for moisturizing very dry skin and dry hair. The downside with coconut oil is that it's highly comedogenic and if oil from the scalp touches your face it can lead to a breakout which can mean hyperpigmentation which can take years to get rid of. The second issue with how heavy coconut oil is is that the extra washing needed to remove oil from hair is also quite damaging. So for eczema it's okay to use coconut oil but for acne prone skin lightweight gels and water-based serums for example are better for you."

"Coconut oil actually has more research to support it as being helpful. Coconut oil has high levels of lauric acid and myristic acid, not super high levels of oleic acid which is thought to be disruptive. When coconut oil was applied to premature infants twice a day for seven days and then daily thereafter, they actually had overall much less transepidermal water loss in comparison to not using anything. Coconut oil as a moisturizer has also been examined in people who have atopic dermatitis, a skin condition where inherently you have an impaired skin barrier that is prone to water loss and flares of itchy, dry, red, inflamed skin, and coconut oil both in children and adults has been shown to reduce dryness and eczema severity in clinical studies. When coconut oil is applied to the skin of adults with atopic dermatitis, it's actually been shown to reduce the burden of colonization with staphylococcus aureus bacteria, and if you know anything about atopic dermatitis, the skin becomes inflamed, the barrier is impaired, and it's prone to becoming colonized with staph bacteria that subsequently make the skin condition even worse."

"Coconut oil has potential to moisturize the skin, soften and smooth it. Anything above and beyond that being stated on social media is just anecdotal hype. Another potential drawback is that if you have very oily skin you may find that this is pretty greasy and pretty heavy, and you do run the risk of it going rancid which can cause irritation to your skin."
