What the gurus are saying

Gurus regard CO2 lasers as the gold standard for serious skin resurfacing, especially for deep wrinkles, severe scarring, and significant sun damage. The consensus is that results are strong and often require only two to three sessions. The major trade-off is substantial downtime: expect one to two weeks of bright red raw skin, frequent wound cleaning, and a real infection risk requiring antivirals and antibiotics. Potential side effects include prolonged redness and pigmentation changes, though these are uncommon. Best suited for patients willing to commit to recovery.

"This looks like a CO2 laser, which is a resurfacing laser of the skin. And if you look close, you can see the skin tighten around the little holes where they are firing the laser. It targets water in the skin and is one of the best treatments to improve the appearance of the skin and take years off of your appearance."

"This is a CO2 laser and they're treating acne scars. This uses CO2 laser to vaporize the water in the skin, it tightens and helps to build new collagen so that those acne scars will be less prominent after each treatment."

"The CO2 laser uses CO2 laser to target water in the skin and create these small channels. You can see the skin tighten up around each one of those squares. One of the best procedures for tightening the skin, it can help to remove superficial pigmentation on the skin with pretty low downtime settings. This is probably not going to be too bad to recover from. I love performing CO2 laser."

"The strongest laser for skin resurfacing is the CO2, that hasn't changed in a long time, that's the gold standard for skin resurfacing. CO2 lasers target both the superficial so right on the surface but also super deep layers of the skin. It removes damaged skin cells and pigmentation, literally it just burns them all off. The recovery time can be longer than other lasers because it is ablative. It stimulates the skin to produce new collagen and skin structures. It's used for deep wrinkles, severe sun damage, significant scarring, sagging skin, and removing precancerous cells."

"CO2 lasers go a bit deeper and are a bit more intense. If you have deep etched-in lines and wrinkles, the best chance you have to minimize them is to do CO2 or an erbium laser, though most lasers are not going to completely erase your lines and wrinkles. However, with great results come great responsibility. The downtime of a CO2 laser can be 1 to 2 weeks, and it's not casual downtime like you have with a fraxel where it's a little flaking and peeling. We are talking about bright red raw skin. Usually within the first 48 hours of having a laser like this, you're having to clean your skin every 2 to 3 hours, and this includes in the middle of the night, because you are vaporizing channels of skin, you have lots of raw skin exposed, and it puts you at a high risk for infection. If you're having this type of treatment done, you are typically placed on antiviral medication, oral antibiotics, and sometimes antifungals. Aside from infection, you also run the risk of hyper or hypopigmentation and you also run the risk of prolonged erythema where the skin is reactive or red for many months after the procedure. These risks aren't that common, but they do happen."

"CO2 lasers are fantastic. You can do it for example around the eyes for around £900 a session, sometimes as cheap as £450, but if you're going to go stronger the session prices may be a little bit higher. Generally you only need like two or three sessions with CO2 laser and it works very well for patients with looser skin, especially above the eye area, which is called the Madonna eye lift. CO2 is very ablative and it can leave with pinkness, redness, swelling around the area."
