What they liked

  • Teaches a foundational skincare routine

What they flagged

  • Toner can strip the skin
  • Cleanser may be too harsh

What the gurus are saying

The matched-set premise that you need all three Clinique products together is outdated thinking that this system still rests on. The toner's reputation for harshness, described as 'face stripping,' suggests it's quite drying; people with sensitive skin may want to avoid it. Both reviewers' experience came from years past rather than recent use.

"I was into the Clinique Three-Step System where you use their cleanser, their toner, and their moisturizer. The thought back then was that brands' products were formulated to work best together and you better not veer off from another brand. Now obviously in recent years that's totally not true. I don't even think I might have two brands that match in a routine sometimes."

"My mom and my aunt bought me the Clinique Three-Step System and taught me how to [...] cleanse, tone, and moisturize. It was brilliant marketing from Estée Lauder, really worked well. I mean, it's not entirely true, but [...] I suspect [...] it was probably not as bad for my skin as some of the stuff they sell to teenagers now. [...] It was soft enough for my skin, so I kept up with that."

"Mom bought me Clinique, the three step, and it was like mine [...] in this little zip bag. She was like, 'this is yours now, you stop going to my bathroom touching things. You wash your face with this, bit tone or moisturizer on.' It stands out in my memory."

"My mom took me to the Clinique counter for the three-step: the golden yellow bar, a face stripping toner, and then covering it all up with dramatically different moisturizers."
