What the gurus are saying

This sunscreen's white cast is significant enough that reviewers needed heavy makeup coverage to wear it visibly, and it leaves a glowy finish that persists under makeup throughout the day. One expert praised its lightweight formula, but two found the trade-offs (white cast, glossiness, and $28 price for 30ml) outweighed the benefit that skin felt comfortable underneath. The dimethicone does soothe, yet for most testers this wasn't enough to overcome the cosmetic downsides.

"I'm not sure how they're achieving SPF50 with 6.3% titanium dioxide and 4% zinc oxide. Usually we need about 17% to even hope for a pass in the strict testing houses. Plus it's got lth 4 in it, which is five out of five on the comedogenic scale. It has no other good actives in it either. And it costs $20 for 30ml. So for me this is going to be a minus 4 out of 10."

"You've got the Clinique mineral SPF 50 which is actually quite nice because it's a lightweight formulation. It's something that can be easily reapplied, and that's my main theme that I always talk about with sunscreens, because the effectiveness of sunscreens isn't about whether it's mineral or chemical or what ingredients it has. It's about how many times you apply it and whether you're consistent with it. There's no point having a nice sunscreen that you only wear once a week because you're not going to get any benefit from it."

"It says it's for sensitive skin, it costs 28 dollars for 30 mils. [...] It has titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. It starts out a bit greasy but then it does dry down, but it's glowy, it is uber glowy, and it leaves a super duper white cast, so much so that I had to really cover this up later with makeup and a lot of makeup. I went in with my Jones Road and after that that still wasn't enough, and then I had to use a powder foundation because it was so glowy. [...] My skin felt great throughout the day and it actually looked pretty well after I'd put all the makeup on, but when the makeup wore off throughout the day, which it always does with me, I was left with the white cast. Unfortunately this just did not work. I thought it was a bit on the pricey side. For me I gave it a one out of five, and it only got a one because my skin felt really good, which I think is from the dimethicone, but this was just another one that was not a winner."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.
