What the gurus are saying

Dermatologists praise clindamycin as an effective short-term anti-inflammatory tool for clearing acne quickly and preventing scarring while longer-acting treatments take hold, though it typically doesn't solve acne long-term. Reviewers note it can sting on application and recommend pairing topical versions with benzoyl peroxide to guard against antibiotic resistance, and warn that acne often returns once treatment stops.

"Clindamycin has an anti-inflammatory property that is actually pretty effective for clearing acne. It's not a long-term solution but it can be a helpful tool in this case, in particular for clearing up the acne so that it doesn't go on to scar, and in the meantime initiating therapies that might take a little bit longer to start working. That way you don't put yourself at risk for scarring. There can be topical antibiotics such as clindamycin your dermatologist might also prescribe you a course of oral antibiotics, usually three months, sometimes more, and this really can help clear up acne, but it does come back usually when you stop. So it's not really a long-term solution. It's merely meant to clear up what you have so that other treatments can be initiated that take longer to start."

"I was using this, it's another prescription, it's a spot treatment, it's antibacterial. It kind of stings when you put it on but that's how you know it's working. I do like to pair this with benzoyl peroxide because it helps prevent bacterial infection against that antibiotic solution."
