What they liked

  • Cooling sensation calms flushing and heat
  • Lifting and firming benefits over time

What they flagged

  • Menthol may sting sensitive skin
  • Cooling effect feels like a placebo

What the gurus are saying

The cooling sensation wins real praise, especially for those experiencing heat flushes or needing a pick-me-up during travel. However, experts split on whether the menthol tingle is the real worker or mainly a pleasant feel-good effect. That means those sensitive to menthol's sting may want to patch-test first, while the firming and lifting benefits, if they show up, likely come from the other ingredients rather than the cooling alone. At a sale price, gurus lean toward recommending it as a nice treat; at full retail, the verdict softens.

"I love the Clarins Cryo-Flash Cream Mask, which is going to be a cooling mask, which is great if you are in menopause and you're overheating. It will cool you down. If you get really flushed, it will calm you down. It's really, really nice for the airplane as well."

"I have one in my bathroom because I've recently become obsessed with the Clarins Cryo-Flash Cream-Mask. First of all it smells like a spa. Second of all the texture is extremely extremely thick which is great for a really dry winter day or an extremely long plane ride. Third of all it has MGA which is a menthol derivative that rapidly and visibly lifts while reinforcing the skin barrier so it cools your skin when you apply it to your face. And although the directions say apply a very liberal amount and then wipe off any excess I never do that I just apply it and let it all baste and melt into my skin because I am not going to be wasting $80 by wiping it off onto a Kleenex."

"Clarins Cryo-Flash Mask is one I love for fun and always take on long-haul flights. It feels like you just had a cooling facial, reducing your skin temperature by 7 degrees. It's great if you're perimenopausal or menopausal, even on your neck to cool down, and it gives a beautiful cooling sensation and a dewy finish, so you come off a long flight looking fresh."

"This is the Clarins Cryo-Flash Cream-Mask. I was reading through the reviews and apparently it's like really cooling. It's normally $80, it's going to be $40 for me. I feel like an $80 face mask would take a lot for me to convince myself to buy even though I love face masks, but having it at $40 I feel like that's kind of a no-brainer."

"The Clarins Cryo-Flash Cream-Mask is a 10-minute icy cold gel cream face mask. Its highlighted ingredients include MGA, a menthol derivative, organic evening primrose extract, and horse chestnut essence. I find menthol a little bit irritating to my skin, so this probably wouldn't be one for me. It seems like a brightening mask, especially for circulation, but I think it would be a little bit too intense for people with sensitive skin."

"Whilst the mentholy cold thing might be a bit more of a gimmick, it may be down more to the actual ingredients within the mask that help with the lifting, the firming, whatever it is that they're claiming affects. Menthol, whilst it can be irritating in some ways, I believe the way it's formulated into this particular product is more just a cooling sensation and even anti-inflammatory. This is a nice luxury to have. I wouldn't say I will keep buying it to cool down my skin, seeing as I do know my moisturizers do just as good a job. Even like a cold mask in the fridge, even just a sheet mask straight out the pack also cools down my skin. This gives you that kind of placebo effect, because you feel it as well. You're like, oh my God, it's tingling, it's cooling, it must be working. And maybe over a period of time, this can have some really nice lifting and firming effects on your skin. I'm going to keep using it because it was expensive. It was like 50 quid. So maybe in a month's time or so I might have some updates for you. But I don't really enjoy the feeling of stingy menthol on my skin."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
