What the gurus are saying

This tint shines as a highlighter and primer rather than a full-face foundation. One reviewer found it calms redness and sits beautifully under concealer or alone, while another praises its glistening, blurred-skin glow and uses it as a highlighter instead. The takeaway: it works best layered under other products or as a glow accent, particularly for those who are not extremely dry, since the sheer formula may not give enough coverage or hydration worn solo across the face.

"I really like this kind of underneath foundations or by itself underneath concealer. It did kind of calm down the redness, but it looks very skin-like. It definitely is more of a tint like it says in the name. Based off of this application experience, I feel like I would probably use this more as a priming type product."

"The Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Foundation Stick is a beautiful highlighter. I don't know how anyone could use it as a foundation. It's labeled as a foundation stick but it's actually a beautiful highlighter. It's like a filter in a stick."

"It looks like a foundation stick, it's so glowy. I'm actually using it today as a highlighter and it's stunning, so beautiful. I really love it as a highlighter, very natural and glowy, not too much. It looks really soft and kind of blurry on the skin, which is nice. But there's no shot that I'm using that as a foundation all over my face. It's like a Flawless Filter in a stick. I don't know if you're extremely dry, then maybe you could use it all over your face, but I'm not."

"That's a highlight, that's not a foundation. Not for me. If you have oily skin, just go the other direction unless you're literally looking for a highlighter. It's very pretty when it comes to a highlighter, and having it in stick form is probably a little bit more user friendly for slightly oilier skin because it's not a liquid. Stick form is easier for travel."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
