    What the gurus are saying

This cream's mandelic acid gently exfoliates to smooth rough, crepey skin while the encapsulated centella asiatica supports barrier repair and skin renewal, with results visible within a week for texture and four weeks for firmness. Dermatologists praise its creamy yet lightweight texture that layers well and works across face and body, making it particularly effective for mature skin, keratosis pilaris, and textured areas like elbows and knees. The gentle exfoliation makes it a good option for those who find stronger acids like glycolic or lactic too irritating.

"This hands down has to go to Cetaphil Skin Activator hydrating and firming cream. The body is one of the most overlooked parts of mature skin routine. Neck, chest, arms, hands show signs of aging just like your face does. And most people are applying nothing targeted to those areas. Cetaphil Skin Activator stands out from body moisturizers because it goes beyond hydration and it helps specifically support skin's renewal and firmness. Its skin activator technology is designed to encourage healthier cell turnover in those surface skin cells. And it's also formulated with mandelic acid, which is a type of alpha hydroxy acid that's much gentler than glycolic, but it's still effective for improving texture and also has encapsulated centella asiatica, which is going to help support your skin barrier. Clinically, this is shown to visibly smooth texture in as little as one week and improve firmness within 4 weeks. For mature skin that's dealing with crepey texture, dryness, loss of elasticity on the neck, chest, body, this is excellent and genuinely effective option at a drugstore price point."

"My other go-to that I'm reaching for right now for my body is the Cetaphil Skin Activator Hydrating and Firming Cream. This is one of those body creams I reach for when I want something that goes on beyond like the classic hydration. It's really designed to help improve skin firmness and texture over time, which I think is really helpful since body skin can start to feel a little less smooth and resilient at my age. What's interesting about this formula is that it's targeting both surface cell turnover and barrier repair, which naturally slow down over time. So it's helping the skin function a little more efficiently again. It also has a very wearable texture. It's super easy to use consistently, which is really what makes the biggest difference with body care. The key ingredients here are mandelic acid and capsulated centella asiatica."

[...] The moisturizer provides long-lasting hydration while supporting skin firmness and elasticity. "Cetaphil has come out with a new line. Over the past several years, Cetaphil has been launching and hitting, launching, hitting. They're not just pump and dump. So this line, the hydrating and firming cream, this is the face, neck, and chest cream. It has mandelic acid and alpha hydroxy acid that's super gentle and hydrating. It has centella asiatica extract in it, but they encapsulate it, which is interesting. I assume that means it's more stable as that antioxidant punch. This is a really good neck cream."

Dermatologist Skincare Empties: What I’d Actually Buy Again
"The new Cetaphil Healthy Renew Skin Activator Hydrating and Firming Cream. I really love this. Would definitely repurchase. This whole hydrating and firming line from Cetaphil features moisturizers of varying textures that contain mandelic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that's hydrating and gently exfoliates to smooth rough dry skin and help plump the skin for a firming effect. These products also contain centella asiatica extracts which are thought to help with repair processes and healing and may even benefit you if you are attempting to improve the final appearance of stretch marks while they're in the actively forming stage. This has been great. I've loved everything in this line and I would definitely repurchase. You can use this on the face as well. It's very thick. It's very hydrating and it leaves the skin plumped and firm the following day."

"This is Cetaphil's hydrating and firming cream that is new. I talked to the scientists at Galderma. They sent me the evidence behind it. They're pairing mandelic acid with mandelic acid in this firming cream. And they found that they synergistically work together to clear out senescent cells and increase collagen and increase dermal thickness and epidermal thickness in the skin. So this helps with crepey skin of the neck, your elbows, your knees. So a nice moisturizer that you can even use on your face too at an affordable price."

"I absolutely love it. It is the skin activator hydrating and firming cream. I'm really talking about the one for the face and neck because I do find of all the textures, even though the formulas are very similar, it's much creamier and more nourishing and that is exactly what I love and need as we transition into fall and winter. It's a nice creamy moisturizer but is not heavy or thick and layers nicely under sunscreen. It has a combination of this unique technology that is a micro dose mandelic acid and encapsulated centella. Centella we know not only helps soothing but actually also has skin rejuvenation benefits. So with these two combinations in their formulation it's proven to really help with crepey skin with fine lines and wrinkles. So really ideal for those that have more mature skin wanting to firm up their skin at the same time using a moisturizer that's nourishing and beneficial for supporting the skin barrier at the same time. That is what I've been using morning and actually at night."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
