What the gurus are saying

Gurus consistently praise CeraVe's retinol as well-formulated, gentle, and accessible, with particular appeal for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. The formula's inclusion of niacinamide and licorice root extract is frequently cited as a strength. The main caveat is that retinol formulations vary across brands and batches, requiring more attention to ingredient checks than prescription alternatives like adapalene.

"CeraVe, L'Oreal brands, their retinols are going to be well formulated. Retinol can improve collagen production. It can do things like improve the visible signs of skin aging, sun damage. Retinol might be a little bit gentler."

"Retinol might be a little bit gentler, easier to tolerate. The advantage of adapylene in my opinion is that it really takes a lot of the guesswork out of it because it's a medication, it's very standardized in the formula. Whereas retinol, there are so many brands that have a retinol each with different ingredients added. For example, you might find a retinol from CeraVe that has niacinamide in it. You kind of have to pay attention to ingredients more when using retinol."

Dermatologist Explains: Which is the Best Retinol for You!
"They've done a great job with the retinol. For myself personally, especially in the winter time when things start to get dry and sensitive on the face, I'm going to use a retinol. If you have some hyperpigmentation and you want to help with those dark spots and fine lines and wrinkles in your mid-20s and up, CeraVe is a nice gentle option with licorice root extract. You've got niacinamide in this, and it's very affordable."
