What the gurus are saying

The experts praise CeraVe's retinol for being notably gentle and well-tolerated, even by those with sensitive skin and rosacea. The formula includes niacinamide and licorice root extract, which help calm skin while the retinol works on dark spots and fine lines, and it's affordable. One thing to keep in mind: retinol formulas vary widely between brands, so those new to retinol may want to patch-test first and pay close attention to what other actives are in the mix to avoid over-layering with other treatments at home.

"CeraVe's retinol is good because it's an L'Oreal company and they do really good by their formulas."
Dermatologist Q&A: Tretinoin, Retinol, Sunscreen & Sensitive Skin
"Retinol might be a little bit gentler, easier to tolerate. The advantage of adapylene in my opinion is that it really takes a lot of the guesswork out of it because it's a medication, it's very standardized in the formula. Whereas retinol, there are so many brands that have a retinol each with different ingredients added. For example, you might find a retinol from CeraVe that has niacinamide in it. You kind of have to pay attention to ingredients more when using retinol."

Dermatologist Explains: Which is the Best Retinol for You!
"They've done a great job with the retinol. For myself personally, especially in the winter time when things start to get dry and sensitive on the face, I'm going to use a retinol. If you have some hyperpigmentation and you want to help with those dark spots and fine lines and wrinkles in your mid-20s and up, CeraVe is a nice gentle option with licorice root extract. You've got niacinamide in this, and it's very affordable."
