What the gurus are saying

Gurus universally praise this as a dermatologist-safe alternative to antibiotic creams for wound care and a versatile occlusive for dry skin and slugging. Its lanolin-free formula, reinforced with barrier-supporting ceramides and hyaluronic acid, sets it apart from plain petroleum jelly. The consensus is that a pea-sized amount goes far for cuts, chapped lips, dry heels, and strategic face placement for dewy finish without the irritation risk of Neosporin or Bacitracin.

"Very thick occlusive barrier ointment that you can apply to help slug and help seal in your moisturizer at the end of the night. Just a thin film goes a long way. And if you want to protect any cracks on your hands and feet, go ahead and use it."

Dermatologist Explains: The Most Common Wound Care Mistakes to Avoid When Dealing with Cuts
"CeraVe Healing Ointment is a good option if you have a known lanolin sensitivity. It's a safe petrolatum-based product to use, even on the face. It's way better to put on cuts than an over-the-counter antibiotic cream like Neosporin or Bacitracin."
How To Treat Scars Like a Dermatologist
"When you get a cut I like Plano Aquafor Vaseline or CeraVe Healing Ointment. I like this more for like dry heels a large area of dry skin. The ointment is pretty soothing and goes on, doesn't hurt, doesn't sting. I like moisture with wounds. Keeping a nice moist layer of CeraVe Healing Ointment over it to help bring in new cells. This has been proven over time. We want to keep a nice layer of moisture because it brings in keratinocytes and it promotes re-epithelialization much better."

"Apply some petrolatum ointment like Vaseline, Aquaphor, CeraVe Healing Ointment, or Cetaphil Healing Ointment. The only thing with Cetaphil Healing Ointment though is it has beeswax, which I worry about on the lips. I'm seeing a lot more beeswax sensitivity. Those are good to put on your lips, and you can apply a little bit on your cheekbones after you apply your serums just for extra glow."
You Are Doing Your Skincare Incorrectly: Common Skincare Routine Mistakes
"You can follow up with a thicker petrolatum ointment to seal it in and that could be with the CeraVe Healing Ointment. You can use just a pea-size amount to seal in the moisture and get that dewy glow. A lot of people like to apply it not just to the lips but just a small amount to like the cheekbones. I like to throw a little bit on the forehead there just to plump up the skin and hide those fine lines and wrinkles. Right after your hyaluronic acid goes on, you can put a cream on and a little bit of this to occlude and retain that moisture so it doesn't evaporate."
Dermatologist Explains: How to Treat Dry, Cracked Heels and Hands
"CeraVe Healing Ointment has the ceramides of course, no lanolin, it has panthenol and hyaluronic acid which is documented that will help hydrate the skin. I recommend to my patients to apply CeraVe Healing Ointment because it's great for cuts, burns, wounds, and after a biopsy. It's an occlusive ointment that works as a barrier to protect your wound so you won't get infection. You can apply this to your heels at night before going to bed and when you put a sock over it, the next morning when you take your sock off it's like magic."

"CeraVe Healing Ointment has the ceramides of course, no lanolin, it has panthenol and hyaluronic acid which is documented that will help hydrate the skin. I recommend to my patients to apply Vaseline or CeraVe Healing Ointment because those are great. You don't have to put Neosporin. Neosporin causes a lot of allergic contact dermatitis. Bacitracin same. So I just say keep it simple and just put an occlusive ointment as a barrier to protect your wound so you won't get that infection."

Top Skincare Routine Mistakes You Need To Stop Making Now!
"This one has ceramides and hyaluronic acid, no lanoline. This is a great one. You only need a small amount, less than a pea size amount, really. There's a pea on cheekbones, forehead. If you get a little flaky here you can put some in your eyebrows to help shape them. If you have a little flaking there, little seborrheic dermatitis, you can get those flakes down. I like to put it in the corners, especially before you go to bed, and then a little extra on your lips, corners of your lips and the lips itself."
Dermatologist Explains: Three Skincare Hacks You Need to Do Now!
"It is a nice safe product that we do for babies, kids, and adults. I've been recommending it for years, even before I was a Harvard dermatologist. It's just a great thing for wound care and so it has a lot of different uses. If you have a cut or scrape, I like petrolatum whether it's the CeraVe Healing Ointment. For wound care, totally use petrolatum for a non-infected wound to help protect it and then cover it with a Band-Aid. If you want to slug and get a little dewy finish, apply a petrolatum ointment over say your moisturizer or your hydrating serum, especially on the cheekbones, just a pea-size amount, and you can really glow up and get a nice dewy finish. If you have really oily skin or if you're dealing with acne, you might want to avoid slugging because you don't want to occlude the pores. If you have dry, cracked heels, when your skin is damp, you get out of the shower and you layer a nice generous layer of CeraVe Healing Ointment and you put a sock over it, go to bed, the next day your heels will be much better."

Dermatologist Explains: THREE Tips to Optimize Your Bedtime Skincare Routine!
"You're going to get your Vaseline or Aquaphor or CeraVe Healing Ointment, just put a small amount on your eyelid skin and a little bit down on the cheekbone because my cheekbones tend to collect tears there they get irritated, and then you also put a little bit on your lips to slug your lips because this is an area where I see my patients get really chapped lips and irritation. While we sleep the heaters are on and it's pulling out all the moisture from our face, so it's really important to put Vaseline or some kind of petrolatum over the lips and over the eyelids, so when you put your retinol on you won't have as much dryness and irritation. I like to just spot treat this on the eyelid skin and on the lips before bedtime."

"Wonderful for dry, cracked hands. Put it on and then cover your hands with cotton gloves, sit that way for at least an hour, if not overnight. It really can help with the dry, cracked hands tremendously. CeraVe Healing Ointment is an ointment that is majority petroleum jelly. Admittedly, these do feel a bit greasy on the skin."

Retinol, Hormonal Acne, Collagen Loss: A Dermatologist Breaks It ALL Down
"The CeraVe Healing Ointment is kind of like Aquaphor or Vaseline, but it's a matter of personal preference. If you're allergic to lanoline, you have to avoid Aquaphor. This does not have lanoline. In contrast to Aquaphor and in contrast to just plain petroleum jelly, whose only ingredient is petroleum jelly, this has hyaluronic acid and ceramides. So this has some ingredients that target the barrier and help actively with moisture retention. Petroleum jelly alone is not going to give you an immediate plumping effect like the next day, but without a doubt, you will have better water retention in the skin. It doesn't necessarily need humectants to improve water content because it's so good at reducing transepidermal water loss that the water gets there and stays there like it's supposed to instead of evaporating out."

"I do suggest putting a little bit of petroleum jelly ointment, Vaseline, Aquaphor, or CeraVe Healing Ointment to these areas to prevent it from penetrating and accessing that skin because it can be very irritating in the long run."

"The Caravee healing ointment is a long-standing favorite petroleum jelly barrier healing superhero. In contrast to plain petroleum jelly, which is also excellent for restoring the skin barrier, this packs a little bit of an extra punch in that it has ceramides, lipids naturally found in skin's outermost layer along with hyaluronic acid, a humectant that helps improve water retention, plumping the skin. The healing ointment helps with healing whether it be dry, irritated skin, an impaired skin barrier, or a cut, a scrape, chapped skin from harsh winter winds, chafing under the arms or between the thighs. It creates a physical barrier that limits access of irritants and allergens, but also helps put the brakes on transepidermal water loss, allowing for your skin to begin to heal, to retain moisture, and to allow for better barrier recovery, the production of those important factors in the brick and mortar that makes the skin barrier."

"Their healing ointment is Vaseline elevated. It has hyaluronic acid and ceramides. The hyaluronic acid nicely hydrates in this formula. If you put this on the lips, not only does it help keep them from getting dry and chapped and protect them from saliva, a real common lip aggravant, but it sort of has a plumping effect."

"I like to do the soak and smear technique where you pat dry the skin a little bit of visible drips and you slather on a petroleum jelly based ointment. "If you are on Accutane and your lips are not becoming dry and chapped to a certain extent, are you even taking it? In addition to recommending that they use copious amounts of petroleum jelly, Vaseline, Aquaphor, or CeraVe Healing Ointment to protect the lips to mitigate the symptom, we also have come to learn that there is a role for omega-3 fatty acid supplements in reducing the dryness that people experience with isotretinoin and Accutane."

Walmart Skincare Finds: Products I Swear By
"CeraVe Healing Ointment is quite good for daytime use because it's not greasy and it's pretty fast absorbing. It's got colloidal oatmeal in it, which is very soothing and hydrating. I would go CeraVe over Aquaphor for non-Vaseline, non-straight petroleum jelly things because it's got hyaluronic acid. It works better for me on the lips. This is amazing. It's really a good ointment, one of the best actually. It has macro and micro hyaluronic acid, so you're getting a gradient effect of different sizes of hyaluronic acid. It also comes with licorice root derived ingredients, which are anti-inflammatory, good for redness, good for eczema prone skin, and good for hyperpigmentation as well. It's got shea butter too. It's a fantastic option for fragrance-free moisturizing needs."
Dermatologist Shops Walmart Skincare… What’s Actually Worth It?
"This is a petroleum jelly ointment with some upgrades. Hyaluronic acid and ceramides, namely. And this also serves as a skin protectant to reduce penetration of stuff. This also helps to improve water content, really limiting transepidermal water loss, giving a plumping and smoothing effect. The upgrade of the CeraVe Healing Ointment is worth it for the lips in particular because it has that hyaluronic acid in there which really has this nice water retaining ability similar to glycerin, but the hyaluronic acid gives a little plumping effect. When I was using this regularly on my lips, I swear my lips looked a little fuller, just the tiniest bit fuller. It was really nice because sometimes when your lips are just a little bit dry, it seems like they flatten down. This really prevents that in my experience."
Viral Skincare Hacks THAT WORK!
"You could use something like CeraVe Healing Ointment. Those are ointments, skin protectants as a reminder, that are going to limit penetration of things into the skin, that's why they come last. When it comes to the nails, using CeraVe Healing Ointment, if that's what you like and happen to be using, the nails can really help quite a bit because what it does is the same way it's helping with slugging on your face, it's helping to protect the skin around the nails, especially that proximal nail fold, and it helps keep the cuticle hydrated and healthy and ultimately improves barrier function at those sites."
Repair The Skin Barrier Fast With The Soak & Smear Method
"Plenty of people do really well with CeraVe Healing Ointment, so it's not to say that it's off the table, but as a dermatologist I'm going to always recommend plain petroleum jelly because less risk of allergic contact dermatitis and less expensive."
Skincare Products I Can't Believe I Used Up
"I love CeraVe's Healing Ointment, this is probably one of my favorite products from CeraVe. It's a little bit different in comparison to just plain Vaseline petroleum jelly. It has ceramides which are good for the moisture barrier, but it also has hyaluronic acid which helps with improving water content in the stratum corneum, kind of has a plumping and smoothing effect. I really love using this on the lips, but I primarily use it on my feet. I also use it a lot around my ankles because with working out and running I end up getting kind of a bit of friction. I find that this helps lubricate the skin surface and cut down on thickening of the skin around the ankles."

"The CeraVe Healing Ointment is great because you have the ceramides there which may help with your barrier and it also has hyaluronic acid which can help in improving moisture content in the stratum corneum and ultimately that really helps your barrier to go along and act right and mature properly and function better when the water content is optimized."

"I'm CeraVe Healing Ointment all the way. This is a petrolatum based ointment that provides that intense hydration. It doesn't clog your pores. It's formulated with ceramides to repair and strengthen the skin barrier. I think it's great for eczema prone skin, cracked lips, cracked heels, really cuticles, anything cracked. It's not going to burn your skin. It is lanoline free and fragrance free, making it a really safe choice for even the most sensitive skin. The key ingredients are petrolatum to help seal in moisture and protect the skin barrier, ceramides which help restore the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss, as well as hyaluronic acid that will hydrate and improve skin texture."

It's sealing in that moisture and preventing epidermal water loss."

"I love CeraVe Healing Ointment. It contains about 46% petrolatum. Petrolatum is by far the most occlusive ingredient that you can use in skincare. It really does create the most barrier. It really seals everything in and it is really great for fighting severe dehydration, especially as you're sleeping. Some folks have really good success just putting this all over their face and they wake up with really glowing skin in the morning. You could also mix a dollop of this into your existing moisturizer to kind of cut down some of the greasiness. I personally have found some success where I selectively slug with CeraVe Healing Ointment on certain areas, especially with combo skin where I get a little bit more dry and dehydrated in others. A big one is my under eye area, which can get very dry and dehydrated very quickly. It really helps to hold all the hydration in place so my under eyes are nice and smooth and plump when I wake up in the morning. I also sometimes will put it around my chin area."

Sick Skincare Go To's
"I do like to use something with petrolatum to kind of help protect that skin throughout the day, so CeraVe Healing Ointment is a big one. Another use that I had for it was around my eye area because when I get sick my eyes can get very dry and scratchy, and because I'm just so prone to dryness in my eyes already they do tend to leak and water a lot, and that makes the area around my eyes very dry and irritated. I do like to put a little bit of CeraVe around the eye area as a protectant to help seal moisture in and help protect against all that wateriness. My eye area got very dry but with the CeraVe it was feeling a lot more moisturized. It's a great protectant for the nose area and the upper lip area too."
Fall PM Retinal Skincare Routine + Why I Stopped Tretinoin
"CeraVe Healing Ointment, this is a petrolatum ointment with 46% petrolatum in here, and that's what creates that really thick ointment balm texture. It's so thick, and sometimes it's hard to get out of the package. I'm taking a small amount and putting it around my eye area, slugging my eye area because my eye allergies have been really bad and when they're so irritated and itchy they start to water nonstop, which makes this area really dry. Because that area has been red, inflamed, and a little bit puffy, this just helps to seal in the skincare and hug in a little bit more of the moisturizing products I've applied."
Melt the Day Away | Calming Skincare Routine
"I'm going to finish up with some CeraVe Healing Ointment. This is 46% petrolatum. I am just putting it around my eyes. This is another habit that I fell into when I was sick with covid back in January and I've been sticking with it because as I mentioned this very early spring weather is kind of flaring up some very mild allergy symptoms for me and one of those symptoms is very watery, slightly puffy eyes, which actually make my eye skin feel very dry. It's actually creating an additional seal on all that skincare that we layered in, and so it's actually going to make that skincare last longer for me as I'm sleeping. I also do sleep with an eye mask on to block out the light and that absorbs a little bit of the skincare around my eyes and can result in some dryness. You can always feel free to slug in specific areas."
10 Top Tips for Tretinoin | AD ft Dermatica
"If you like to use something that is petroleum based like the CeraVe Healing Ointment, apply a small amount of that onto your lips, maybe even a little bit on top of the border of your lips, around your nose and underneath your eye. The petroleum will really block it because it's very occlusive, so if you accidentally go over those areas, the petroleum based product is going to kind of block in a way the tretinoin and the petroleum will really block it. If you've had really bad irritation in those areas in the past, I would say use petroleum over moisturizer, but these are ways that can help you even if you accidentally go over those areas to help sidestep the flakiness, the redness, and the uncomfortable skin."
Tips for Using Tretinoin in Winter | AD ft Dermatica
"You can slug over your moisturizer with petrol-based products like CeraVe Healing Ointment, Vaseline, or Aquaphor, or you can even mix a little bit into your main moisturizer to oomph up that protective barrier that it creates on the skin without adding another thick and sometimes sticky layer on top of your skin. This is also a really great tip if you spend an extended amount of time outside in harsh temperatures, if you're working outside, shoveling, maybe hiking, add a little bit of petrolatum-based product into your moisturizer to create that protection against the wind and against the icy temperatures."

Sleeping Masks I Keep on Repeat! #sluggingskincare
"What I like about the formula is that it's not just the petroleum, there's a couple of other skin beneficial ingredients in here with the humectant, the emollient, the skin conditioning ingredients. It's not the most elegant texture, right, the petroleum is very thick. It's an ointment, it's called a healing ointment, that's exactly what it's like. It's like putting a thick ointment layer on your skin, not everybody's going to enjoy that. I do find CeraVe to be one of the better ones because I feel like this texture, because of the additional humectant and emollient, I find that on me personally it half absorbs into my skin, which is good because I don't want that thick layer on top of my skin. It's like all up in my hair and all up on my pillowcases and my blanket. It kind of half absorbs into my skin and then it kind of half sits on top, and I kind of like that. I like this one out of the three the best. I also use this around my eyes, just a thin layer, to resist that creepiness that comes with dry skin underneath the eyes."
If I was repairing my skin barrier today I'd use...
"CeraVe Healing Ointment, the main ingredient here is about 49% petrolatum and that is a very occlusive ingredient. They've also added in some ceramides and some other lipids to help with your skin barrier. You can use this on top of your moisturizer like a much thicker sleeping mask. It's a lot more occlusive than other products, so if you want to really preserve that hydration because you're probably waking up in the morning and your face feels shriveled and tight and dry, the petrolatum will help to ease some of that. It really just stops the loss of hydration. If your dehydration is really bad, you may want to mix a little dab of this into your moisturizer and put it right onto your face. It's not the best for applying makeup on top, I will be honest, it's a little thick and greasy, but it actually is one of the best ways to preserve all the hydration in your skin, so work from home days, perfect."

"There's also CeraVe and Cetaphil healing ointment although I do find those two to be not as occlusive enough. I honestly when it comes to lips I much rather prefer just 100% petrolatum or Aquaphor. I find that these two really add the most long-lasting occlusive protective benefits to my lips compared to the other two. The other two I feel like look just a little bit more lightweight so not so much great for the lips based on my personal opinion but I love it for other places like chapped flaky skin on the face or say like chafing on the underarms it works really well but it's not as sticky or heavy."

"I do slugging at night specifically the area around my eyes, the very last thing I do at night when I hop into bed is apply a little bit of the CeraVe Healing Ointment just under my eyes and actually around my eyes to keep them plump. It really works. I also use it as a makeup primer just under the eyes and down the center of my face right where my T-Zone is. It's fantastic, my application is super smooth and the makeup stays put. I suspect it might not be great for those with oily or combination skin so beware. I think that it can probably cause milia, but I personally don't suffer from that. "It is super thick and a little goes a long way, but it is also super bland. I was at the point where my skin barrier was pretty irritated. I was using some of my favorites even like La Roche-Posay triple moisturizing cream, their double repair facial moisturizing cream, and some healing ointment, and even those were kind of burny and stingy, but this was not. So this has become a staple in my repair skincare routine now. I have just been wildly impressed with that product."

"One thing that I really like for when people feel really tight and really dry I like to suggest using a CeraVe Healing Ointment. You want your fragrance-free things, you want things that are not going to irritate the skin at all, and that's what you're going to do the night when you get home and then for a few days after that."

"Before I apply this I apply an ointment, the one I like is the CeraVe Healing Ointment, and I just apply to those areas so that I don't get too much dryness from this soaking in. So I like doing that. After you apply this in your evening routine be sure to apply it with a good moisturizer a sleep mask afterwards because it is on the strong side."

"The CeraVe Healing Ointment is more like an ointment, more like Vaseline. It's a lot thicker. I use it more to protect, especially around my mouth when I use tretinoin or acids, things like that, because I have a tendency at irritation in the corners of my mouth from being dry. I tend to use this one more as like a protective one, like Vaseline. It's wonderful."

"I'm also a really big fan of CeraVe Healing Ointment that's 46.5% petrolatum and then also has additional moisturizing ingredients like ceramides that CeraVe is known for as well as panthenol and even hyaluronic acid to help draw water to the skin surface so a lot of people find that product to be extra moisturizing."

"If you're worried about acetone being too drying, you can apply something like CeraVe Healing Ointment around your cuticles as well as the edges of your nail before you apply your acetone so that it's not drying out the skin around your nail, which can also lead to further nail damage."

"The CeraVe Healing Ointment is like an inclusive dressing that you can apply to the skin when you want that little bit of repair. It can be put on dry, cracked areas, so if you've got dry, cracked skin, especially if you're someone like me that washes your hands like 50, 60 times a day, it's really really useful for those rough kind of areas. It's formulated with petrolatum, which is basically very similar to petroleum jelly or Vaseline. There's also the addition of hyaluronic acid as well as ceramides, so a true CeraVe formulation. There's nothing in the ingredient list that I can see that is comedogenic, so it's good for all skin types. It's fragrance free and lanolin free, so it's not going to irritate anyone. If you've got minor cuts or grazes, all those sort of things, you can actually use this quite nicely on there."

"The CeraVe Healing Ointment has mineral oil, it has ceramides, it contains vitamin E, it contains hyaluronic acid and it contains panthenol. I find this is more hydrating than Vaseline but less hydrating than Aquaphor."
CeraVe SA Healing Ointment | Protect & Soothe Your Skin | Dr. Somji Reviews
"I personally like it. I actually get patients that come and visit me for laser resurfacing, especially from the states, they use that afterwards as almost like an occlusive dressing because when you've just peeled the skin or you've had a chemical peel, you've taken away that surface layer, the epidermis and the lipid layer because that's part of chemical peeling, and you want to put something on that's exactly like that. So you add those three ceramides and then you add a little occlusive dressing over the top with petrolatum jelly and hyaluronic acid, which keeps the moisture within the skin so you're limiting evaporation, you're drawing moisture from inside your own body, and you're also starting with the building blocks of skin by putting in those ceramides. Post resurfacing, even things like post sunburn, if you put this healing ointment on it's going to help that process. You can slug with this ointment as well."

"I'm using the CeraVe Healing Ointment and I prefer this over Vaseline because I feel that it has actual skin repairing qualities. I'm not a fan of slugging so I'll never take Vaseline and put it on my full face, but I'll only use this on the areas where I'm prone to getting dryness."

I Tried Every Lip Balm Ever Made (here are the best 💄)
"The CeraVe Healing Ointment is one of those products that's so multifunctional I find myself using it like everywhere on my body, but I really do enjoy using this as a lip product particularly overnight when I'm already applying a really rich moisturizer. When I apply this over the top it does a good job of keeping my skin moisturized throughout the night whether it be on my face or on my lips. One of the best parts of this product is that it is so cheap. If you buy the smallest bottle that they have and use it exclusively on your lips it'll last you literally like three years and it's $5. However, I'm not going to put it in the top category because it's just not easy to carry around. Most of these other products I can put in my pocket and I'm fine but this one is bigger. Also it's very simple, so if you're wanting a nice treat-yourself experience, if you're wanting a nice fragrance, any of that stuff you're not going to get it. It's not an elegant product by any means. But I always recommend it to people who are like I just need something to really moisturize my lips. This is a great one because you can use it anywhere."

"I'm gonna go in with the CeraVe Healing Ointment. I haven't slugged in like a week so I feel like my skin is definitely needing it. I had drinks earlier today so I think my skin definitely needs some hydration after the dehydration that alcohol takes away from your skin overall. It makes your face super greasy."
