    What the gurus are saying

This ointment earns praise for combining ceramides and hyaluronic acid in a non-irritating formula suitable for all skin types. Gurus highlight its strengths for sensitive or compromised skin, especially after procedures like chemical peels or laser work, where the combination of moisture-drawing hyaluronic acid and ceramides helps rebuild the skin barrier while petrolatum seals moisture in. It's fragrance-free and lanolin-free, so there's nothing in it to irritate even reactive skin.

"I finished the CeraVe Baby Healing Ointment so this is what I was using to slug, to apply to my lips if my lips were dry, I put this on my hands, my heels, you can put this anywhere and it's wonderful and it's very comparable to Aquaphor. This is also pretty much the same as the CeraVe ointment that comes in that dark blue jar or squeezy tube and I think this is great. I really do."

"So you add those three ceramides and then you add a little occlusive dressing over the top with petrolatum jelly and hyaluronic acid, which keeps the moisture within the skin. You're limiting evaporation, you're drawing moisture from inside your own body, and you're also starting with the building blocks of skin by putting in those ceramides. Post resurfacing, even things like post sunburn, if you put this healing ointment on it's going to help that process."

    What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

    Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

    Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

    Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
