  • Not water resistant

What the gurus are saying

This earns strong praise as a significant step up from CeraVe's original AM SPF 30, which reviewers found too thick and chalky. The SPF 50 version wins for its lightweight, blendable texture, niacinamide for oily and acne-prone skin, and ceramides to support the skin barrier. The one thing to keep in mind: it is not water-resistant, so those planning to sweat outdoors or swim may want to reach for a dedicated water-resistant sunscreen instead.

"I just had to give another shout out to the AM SPF 50, that's a great one with niacinamide, very lightweight, much more of an elegant finish than their SPF 30 AM. I've talked about it on the channel multiple times in the last year since using it. It's a great thing to use at the end of your routine, always end with an SPF product, going for SPF 30 and above. Just know that that SPF 50 product, that AM product, is not water resistant, so you want to go for a water resistant sunscreen if you're going to go do water play or work out outside and get sweaty."

CeraVe’s New Mineral Sunscreen… Is It Actually Invisible?
"If you want something ultra lightweight and your priority is sensitive skin, barrier repair, lower irritation risk while protecting yourself from UVA and UVB, this is a good choice. The AM SPF 50 has a little bit more of a white cast in my opinion. It's affordable and [...] accessible, [...] and it has the ingredients that I want. It's mineral based, but it also has ceramides to help repair the skin barrier as well as niacinamide to soothe, repair, and brighten the skin a bit and regulate sebum for patients with acne-prone skin. The best sunscreen is the one you can tolerate every day, and I'd give this a nine out of 10."

"CeraVe has MBE technology, which helps repair the skin barrier with three essential ceramides, and with that MBE technology you're also hydrating the skin. You find that in their moisturizing cream and moisturizing lotion. I like their CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 50. So great line."

How to Upgrade your Morning Skincare Routine!
"The new CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 50 really caught my attention and I was impressed by it. Their AM SPF 30 lotion had a lot of critique from my patients. A lot of them didn't like the thick texture of it even though it was a hybrid with zinc oxide and chemical UV filters. They've really refined that formulation in this SPF 50, so you have a higher SPF and also a lighter weight texture. This is going to be a really popular product going forward because they really made it better. The original wasn't bad, it worked really well for my patients on topical acne medications to help protect their skin, but just the texture is a little too thick and chalky."
How to Layer Your Skincare Products in an Anti-Aging Skincare Routine
"The moisturizer with SPF I have here that I give to my patients in clinic, CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 50. Very lightweight, much more lightweight than its predecessor, the SPF 30 AM. And so I've been liking the SPF 50 much more."
Top Picks: The Best Facial Moisturizers with SPF
"Their new one also has niacinamide so I really like this for my patients who are on acne medications that get dry and they need a moisturizer but they also need to protect their skin barrier with a sunscreen. This is a nice option here that's SPF 50, has niacinamide which will help regulate sebum production. They've even found in studies niacinamide can help with repairing the skin barrier. Right away as soon as I put this on I was just impressed. It just quickly blends into the skin, melts into the skin, nice finish, no white cast."

Dermatologist Reviews: CeraVe’s NEW AM Moisturizer with SPF 50!
"I just put a generous amount on to show you how well this blends in. No stinging at all, even on sensitive skin after shaving. No white cast, very lightweight. I spent $20 for this and it's 3 fluid ounces, where a lot of sunscreens are 1.7 fluid ounces. This is a moisturizer with sunscreen so that's fine. Just know that it's not water resistant, so if you're going to work out or jump in the water or do some water play, you want to use a dedicated sunscreen that's water resistant. But for a little walk or taking my kids to the park and not getting too sweaty, or going to the office, this is a nice sunscreen. No irritation at all. CeraVe has done a great job in making the texture so much more sophisticated. The sensorial experience is very lightweight and people want to look for skincare that's not just about scent or smell, but the way it feels on your skin, and this is very lightweight."

Dermatologist Reviews: The Best $50 Skincare Routine!
"CeraVe came out with their new AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion and it's a winner. Their SPF 50 is so much better than their original AM SPF 30. That was a hybrid formulation with zinc oxide and chemical UV filters but it was way too thick and chalky for a hybrid sunscreen. We have zinc oxide plus chemical UV filters but a much lighter texture, so just a few swipes and you can already tell that even my male patients would be open to wearing this kind of facial moisturizer with SPF. My male patients don't want to wear sunscreen or lotion or moisturizers a lot of times, but if it is lightweight they're open to it. [...] I think CeraVe has done a great job with this. This one being only $16 is a winner. [...] It's going to be a great way to lock in the moisture from [...] your cleanse and a great way to start your day."

Dermatologist's Latest Skincare Must-haves!
"CeraVe has done a good job by improving the formulation of their new AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 50. It is much more lightweight and blends in so much nicer with ease, just a few swipes and it disappears. You have a higher SPF, you have niacinamide, your hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin, plus the three essential ceramides to help repair the skin barrier. That will be really nice for this time of year where you don't need a water resistance sunscreen because we're not outside running in the winter time, but I will wear a sunscreen just driving in the office if we have some sun coming through the side window. If you're going to go for a nice walk and not get too sweaty in the cold weather, an SPF 50 facial moisturizing lotion is perfect."
Skincare Mistakes and Trends of the Year

If Your Skin Looks Dull, Do This Drugstore Routine
"I like sunscreens again with niacinamide. CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 50 has niacinamide."
Yay
"Their AM SPF 50 [...] is a new launch from CeraVe. It's a mixed chemical and mineral sunscreen. I actually find it easier to blend than the 30. [...] The SPF 50 feels nice and aesthetically feels good. It blends a little easier, so I think as time moves forward this might become the go-to for people's starter sunscreens."
Yay
"CeraVe came out with an SPF 50 version of the AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion. Like the SPF 30 version, this is a hybrid sunscreen with both chemical and zinc oxide active sunscreen ingredients. Because of the zinc oxide there is a bit of a white cast, but [...] hybrid sunscreens with zinc plus some chemical filters tend to leave even less cast than strictly mineral sunscreens. If you have a deeper skin tone but you like zinc oxide sunscreens, try a hybrid sunscreen like this one. This formula is nice and lightweight for a sunscreen that has zinc oxide in it, which is one of the reasons I prefer hybrid sunscreens over mineral sunscreens that [...] tend to be a lot thicker and heavier."

"I love the finish on the sunscreen. It does have a bit of a white cast but it's a hybrid sunscreen so it's not like hello diaper rash cream on my face, it's more subtle. If you have a deeper skin tone it will show up however."
Moisturizers We Need To Discuss | Skincare Reviews 2024
"CeraVe has a few newer renditions of some of their moisturizers with sunscreen. They came out with some new tints of their mineral sunscreen and they also are now offering an AM facial lotion with a bumped up SPF 50 versus SPF 30 and I really have enjoyed this. It's a hybrid sunscreen with zinc and some chemical filters. It does leave a bit of a white cast but a hybrid has a little bit of a cast but it's not as intense as an all mineral sunscreen is in my experience. The base is a really good daily facial moisturizer with ceramides, which are lipids naturally found in skin's outermost layer. It also has hyaluronic acid which is hydrating, and niacinamide, an antioxidant that's good for redness and dark spots. It's easy to tolerate around the eyes."
*NEW* CeraVe Sunscreens To Try This Fall
"Super lightweight, it's very moisturizing, it's very hydrating, not the least bit greasy. All sunscreens in my opinion do leave some degree of shine to the skin surface, [...] but in the grand scheme of that shine, this is what I would classify as more of a demi matte finish. [...] If you've ever used their SPF 30 but you want to bump up the sun protective factor, try this, it's great. I have nothing negative to say about this whatsoever. It's not water resistant, so if you're going to be doing outdoor-based activities or sports or swimming, then I would recommend choosing a water resistant sunscreen. But for an everyday facial moisturizer with a good sun protective factor, this is excellent. Easy to use around the eyes, gentle, sensitive skin friendly, oily skin friendly, dry skin friendly. It's great for any age group. [...] I've been using this very regularly over many months now, not a single time did this pill on me. I've really enjoyed how easy this is to apply, how smooth it goes on the skin surface, and [...] it does not leave that white cast. [...] This is a really great daily facial moisturizer for heading into colder months. It addresses the needs of the barrier, which can need a little bit more TLC in the colder months."
Moisturizer With SPF? | Vlog
"If someone picks up a product that's marketed as a moisturizer with SPF they may just apply it lightly like a moisturizer, in which case they're not getting good coverage because they're not really applying it as densely to all surfaces. But if you use it like a sunscreen you're good. Sunscreens are moisturizers, they're in a moisturizing base, lotion, cream, gel. This particular one is a hybrid sunscreen."
Yay
"The last product I love for dry skin from CeraVe is their SPF 50 Facial Lotion. This one is great because it has pretty much all the things I talked about earlier, niacinamide to control transepidermal water loss, and ceramides for the skin barrier. There's also SPF 50, so if you're someone who doesn't like having so many different products, like a separate sunscreen and a moisturizer, this would be great for you because you have an SPF and a wonderful lotion that's great for your skin all in one. You can't go wrong with this."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Source: DermNet

Ceramides

Ceramides are part of the skin's own barrier, and moisturisers built around them have evidence for holding water in and settling the tightness and flaking that come with a damaged barrier.

Source: DermNet

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.
