What the gurus are saying

Its 2% salicylic acid penetrates deep into cystic pimples, reaching the oil gland to dry them up even when they haven't surfaced. It's a leave-on gel that works all over the face or as a spot treatment, and reviewers note it has niacinamide to regulate oil and performs similarly to pricier competitors but at roughly half the cost.

"The CeraVe one has 2% salicylic acid. That's going to get down in the pore, obviously good for blackheads and whiteheads. If you have a tendency towards ingrown hairs, salicylic acid can be helpful because it's really good at finessing the follicle and exfoliating it to reduce the likelihood that you'll get trapping of the hair."

September 2025 Skincare: My Top 3 Game Changers
"CeraVe, their acne treatment gel. Very, very similar. 2% salicylic acid leave-on treatment, moisturizing, hydrating. Like half the price. [...] It did not cause me to have any peeling of the skin. [...] I use retinoids and I've been using exfoliating acids for a long time, so I don't really experience much peeling when introducing a new chemical exfoliating product. [...] But occasionally products do cause me some redness, some irritation. I didn't get any of that with this. It was great."

"CeraVe acne control gel also got the 2% salicylic acid. The texture, the performance, the feel, the spread, everything is pretty much the same. So you get more product, less money. [...] This is great for all the things that 2% salicylic acid does. [...] CeraVe is a L'Oreal company. They have huge industrial scale science bench decades in the making with some of their formulations and ingredients."

"For leave-on salicylic acid, this acne control gel is amazing. It's got glycolic and lactic, which are alpha hydroxy acids that gently exfoliate and hydrate. It has salicylic acid which is good for exfoliating the pore. It's good for not only blackheads, whiteheads, pores, but also for hyperpigmentation as well."

SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR BLACKHEADS @DrDrayzday
"CeraVe has their acne control gel and I've said this before, similar to that blackhead product from Neutrogena. Like this and the blackhead product from Neutrogena, they're marketed for people who have acne. Blackheads are a part of acne, they're called open comedones, but these ingredient families and these formulations, they also can be helpful for rough and bumpy skin, keratosis pilaris, hyperpigmentation."
NEW SKIN CARE AT WALMART FOR SUMMER 2022 🛍 @DrDrayzday
"I really like this product because it's got the basics for acne, the two percent salicylic acid that's FDA approved for acne, and then the alpha hydroxy acids can help with skin texture and possibly enhance penetration of the salicylic acid. The vehicle it comes in is this very moisturizing gel, it's not drying at all, so if you have very sensitive skin and you're looking to incorporate salicylic acid into your routine for acne and or hyperpigmentation, you may enjoy this."
Starting tretinoin: WHAT TO USE & AVOID| Dermatologist @DrDrayzday
"This product by CeraVe is a really good acne product, but if you're using your tretinoin at night, you wouldn't want to apply this at night along with it because it can be very irritating. Instead, provided your skin isn't overly irritated, this would be one to maybe consider in the morning."
BEST ACNE SKIN CARE PRODUCTS OF 2021 @DrDrayzday
"CeraVe came out with new acne products this year, and definitely one to not skip is their salicylic acid lotion gel. It has two percent salicylic acid and it also has alpha hydroxy acids—glycolic and lactic acid. These alpha hydroxy acids help dissolve the glue between sticky skin cells, helping to gently exfoliate."

Do This if You Have Oily Skin
"It's designed to be a leave on product, so you can put it on and leave it on all day, and it also has niacinamide to help regulate oil production. This gel does a really good job taking care of pimples that have already surfaced. I find that salicylic acid at 2% is really quite effective for those deep cystic pimples because you get a little bit of penetration down to the oil gland to help dry it up, even if they don't come to a head."

CeraVe Acne Control Gel vs. Cetaphil Acne Moisturizer
"Up until this point, there are really no good exfoliants in my opinion that are widely available to the extent that this one is going to be. This could be a really good addition to a lot of people's skin care routines and it's going to serve multiple benefits outside of acne."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide has evidence behind it for redness, uneven tone and supporting the skin barrier, and it is usually well tolerated even by skin that reacts to most things.

Source: DermNet

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.

Source: DermNet

Alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface. The evidence supports smoother texture and more even tone over time, and they can leave skin more sensitive to sun.
