What the gurus are saying

Tea tree oil is the star ingredient here, but dermatologists found it's not the most effective choice for acne. While tea tree has some antibacterial properties, experts note there are stronger actives available that won't irritate skin the way this can. The formula also packs multiple fruit and oil extracts, which adds complexity that may not work in its favour.

"Burt's Bees Natural Acne Solutions contains tea tree oil. I know there's a lot around tea tree oil and acne because of some of the antibacterial properties, but honestly they are better antibacterials out there that don't irritate the skin."
~Nay
"This one has multiple fruit and oil extracts in it including tea tree oil for starters, and when placed on the skin in a thick layer or under occlusion these can cause irritant contact dermatitis, which is a rash on the skin. And this product only has actually a very low percentage of salicylic acid in it, which just might not be enough to get the job done."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it can get into a pore rather than just working on the surface. That is why it has long-standing evidence for blackheads and milder acne.
