What they liked

  • Watery texture with no white cast
  • Repeat purchase worthy

What they flagged

  • Limited shade range, can look orange
  • Tint not as flattering as competitor options

What the gurus are saying

The watery formula delivers no white cast, which reviewers found surprising in a mineral sunscreen. The tint is strong enough to look orange on some skin, so anyone with those undertones may want to patch-test before committing. Views split on whether it's better than alternatives like Dermatology's Universal tint option; some repurchase while others pass.

"This is from Bubble, this is their Plus One Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40. The big advantages for this is that this is 100% mineral, there's no I believe there's no SPF boosters in here, zinc oxide only, yes 15% zinc oxide in there, and the tint is really nice."

"This has 15 percent zinc oxide. I can't really recognize any SPF booster in the formula so I hope it is SPF 40 but I think it's a decent amount. It has a beautiful antioxidant called capucapu seed butter, it has a high omega-3 profile with lilac extract and raspberry seed extract. This is such a stunning formula. It's so watery, I was so shocked. It doesn't have a cast at all, it's just literally disappears on my skin, living that beautifully bronzed look."

"This is a mineral sunscreen called Bubble Plus One Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40. This has a really delightful hydrating texture that doesn't feel stuffy or suffocating or chalky or just really gloopy texture which a lot of traditional mineral sunscreen has. This has a very hydrating and a very just refreshing texture. The only downside of this product would be the shade range. The tinted of this is pretty strong. I would say it does make my skin look a little bit orange and a little bit darker than my own skin tone. I would definitely use this for summertime where I reach for more mineral sunscreens. It's been a great addition to my skincare routine."

"When it comes to sunscreen, look for at least SPF 30. I like Bubble Plus One Tinted Mineral Sunscreen that has SPF 40."

"This is a tinted lotion. It takes a little work to rub this one in, it kind of foams a little bit, but once you work it a bit it does actually blend well in the end. It feels pretty greasy going on and it's got a pretty shiny finish. The tint is slightly dark for me. It definitely hides the white cast but doesn't give any coverage."

"I tried their tinted sunscreen and that one wasn't bad but it was not like at the level of a lot of other tinted sunscreens. The nice thing about that product is that it is tinted, it has iron oxides, it's a sunscreen so it's going to protect against UV which leads to DNA damage and upregulates pigment production which you don't want when you're trying to fade dark spots, and the iron oxides also protect against visible light which comes from the sun and basically leads to more early onset and more stubborn hyperpigmentation in people with deeper skin tones. But all that to say, like the Bubble tinted sunscreen, there are a lot of other tinted sunscreens on the market that I think look a lot better. They're not as shiny."

"I found the tint on this to be orangey for me, a little bit orangey, not as orangey as some but a little bit too orangey. But there's no chalkiness or white cast to this, it's very dewy. And so if you're looking for a matte sunscreen you're not going to be satisfied with this. It's very dewy. I don't mind a dewy sunscreen and so the sheen on this did not bother me. It wears well in makeup. It's not water resistant so if you're going to be outdoors during the day for a prolonged period of time or you're really sweaty, you're not going to want to rely on this. Because it's tinted though, the iron oxides potentially can offer some beneficial effects for those of you who deal with hyperpigmentation in terms of helping to protect against visible light. It has the iron oxides in there, the tint is a bit too orange for me but it's not horrible, and it does have a flour extract in it so if you're allergic to fragrance it might cross react."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Sunscreen filters

Sun protection is the best evidenced way to slow visible ageing, and the filters are what does the work. Mineral and chemical filters both protect when a product is applied thickly enough and often enough, which is where most people fall short rather than on the choice of filter.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
