What the gurus are saying

Sourced from sugarcane rather than sharks, the squalane in this lightweight moisturizer gets praise for supporting skin with oils it naturally creates, while vitamin C tackles hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and fine lines. The gurus also highlighted the brand's ocean conservation efforts and ethical sourcing practices. It costs more than some options, but those who prioritize sustainable beauty alongside results may find it worth it.

"We picked the Biossance squalane plus vitamin C rose moisturizer. Biossance makes a lot of great products, they use squalane in all of their products which is an oil our skin really needs, and they derive theirs from sugarcane rather than sharks so it's ethically sourced and sustainable, and it has some vitamin C in there for a bit of an antioxidant. It's going to be just a nice lightweight moisturizer to use in the morning, and you can also repeat it in the evening. This is probably the more expensive product we have in this routine and it's not necessary for everybody, you could certainly go with a less expensive moisturizer."

"This Biossance Squalane plus vitamin C Rose moisturizer is fantastic. It does have squalane and skin naturally creates squalene, and squalene is fantastic because it mimics that squalane so this is an oil that really supports the skin with antioxidant benefits. This also has vitamin C which works on hyperpigmentation works on sun spots works on fine lines and wrinkles. This is absolutely mermaid approved. Biossance as a brand the name stands for Biology Renaissance and they care so much about what goes into their products and they really care about ocean conservation efforts. They teach you how to recycle their packages and all of their stuff comes in glass. They promote recycling and they actually work towards ocean conservation efforts."

What the evidence says.

Independent of what the gurus think, this is what the published research supports about the main active ingredients here.

Vitamin C

Topical vitamin C is an antioxidant with reasonable evidence for dullness and uneven tone. It breaks down in light and air, so how a product is formulated and packaged matters as much as the percentage on the front.

Humectants and emollients

Ingredients like these draw water into the surface layers and slow how fast it leaves. The evidence is for comfort, softness and hydration rather than for changing the structure of the skin.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and it is often in a formula to keep the other ingredients stable rather than as the active itself. It pairs well with vitamin C, though on its own the evidence for visible change is limited.
