What they liked

  • Blends powder and cream products seamlessly
  • Lasts longer than generic alternatives
  • Texture feels distinctly different from dupes

What they flagged

  • Foam can degrade and shed black specks
  • Absorbs more product than some prefer
  • Pricey even on sale

What the gurus are saying

The texture of this sponge stands apart from generic alternatives, and it excels at blending powder products into a polished finish. However, gurus split on whether it holds up well over time: some report durability of six months to a year before the foam begins to break down or discolour, while others find it absorbs too much product and feels wasteful compared to cheaper sponges. Those drawn to the original often note it's worth trying on sale, though the premium price tag draws debate.

"I do feel like the original Beautyblenders have something about them that I love. I love how they apply makeup, and I do think that they are different than other sponges. There is something about the material of the Beautyblender that's just special. For some reason, the black Beautyblender works better than all of them in my opinion. It's supreme, it's the best one. This is definitely not a need though, since there are a lot of other sponges on the market."

I Tried The READERS' CHOICE WINNERS... Allure 2023
"The original Beautyblender, what a classic it really is so good. It's another one of those things that's like a bit overpriced in my opinion, like 20 bucks for a sponge is steep, especially with so many great ones available at the drugstore or on Amazon. However, this one just has its own very original texture that really does something special. There are great sponges out there that make it so that you maybe don't need a Beauty Blender, but it is different in my opinion."
Please STOP Being Afraid of Powder.. Here's Why
"If you do not have this in your routine and you want to make your powders look better you need a beauty sponge. This one's the original Beautyblender. I love to use a sponge after powder and I feel like it really makes the biggest difference. You can obviously use this for all your cream products too which is so nice."
LET'S TRY THE READERS' CHOICE 2024 WINNERS 😱
"I'm just going to blend that out with my Beauty Blender. The Beauty Blender won a reader's choice award as well as a Best of Beauty award. I feel like Beauty Blender always wins."
ULTA 21 Days of Beauty STARTS NOW! What’s ACTUALLY Worth It?
"I know even at half off, $10 seems like a lot for a sponge, which it is, but there is something special about the original beauty blender sponge. [...] There's a lot out there, [...] but I wanted to throw it out there if you guys are also like me and you know that there's just something special about the original beauty blender. I love that it will be 50% off. It's a great time to stock up if you're a makeup artist or whatever."
I Tried The HIGH-END 2024 Winners 😱 Makeup, Skin & Body!!
"The best makeup sponge award went to the original Beautyblender, which is what I'm using. I do feel like there are a lot of great sponges out there and I don't think you need to spend an arm and a leg on the Beautyblender, but people have tried to dupe this and the texture of the Beautyblender just is different, and I love it."

"The Beautyblender, in my opinion, is absolutely worth it at $10. I used to recommend the dupes, but they've gotten so much worse over the years, they fall apart and rip so easily. I promise you the Beautyblender is worth it, it's the only one that doesn't rip and fall apart, and I'm bummed the dupes used to be great but aren't anymore."

"The Beautyblender for $10, that is actually amazing, that brings it down to almost drugstore pricing."
ULTA 21 Days of Beauty: What to AVOID & My Top Picks!
"I have an enthusiastic recommendation in Beautyblender. I've stopped looking for dupes and just decided to wait for sales like this, because it's so worth it. I kept buying the dupes and they kept ripping on me, but these last. The only exception is if you're continuing to have a lot of open acne breakouts, then you'll want to replace your sponge more often anyway."

"An old beauty blender. I replaced it with a new one that I got from TJ Maxx. They last a long time, but the more you start to clean them, some of the foam starts to kind of break apart. I used this one for probably a year, though. Maybe six months, maybe a year. So, I would say that's a good outcome for that."

The Strangest Empties for November - Skincare & Beauty Products I've Finished This Month
"I used to get a lot of uses out of these, like sometimes these would keep going after like a year, but the last time I went to use this one I was all ready for the day and I look in the mirror and there's black specks all over my face, which is from this degrading. That was a bummer. I don't know if it was something with the color or something I that touched it or something, but yeah, these are normally kind of expensive."
Amazing August Skincare & Beauty Product Empties - What I've Finished This Month!
"I've got a beauty blender that was starting to degrade, although this was a generic version. I think I like this version much better than the regular brand version, and it was probably more than half the price, so I actually ended up liking that one better."
WTF Was I Thinking Skincare and Beauty Purchases?!?!
"I picked up two of these and [...] my other generic beauty blender was just much better. It didn't absorb as much product and it felt like it had a more natural finish. [...] I was instantly disappointed even getting these on sale. I could have got the generic and probably got 10 of the generic ones and I like the generic ones better. They just don't soak up as much product, they feel fluffier, they absorb more water. I don't [...] get it. Even with the bad math conversion, [...] sometimes these things just feel wasteful."

"I got a beauty blender sponge online when it was on sale the other day and that thing is just compared to this one it's terrible. I thought beauty blenders were like the best sponge but that one just all it does is soak up product. I had much better luck with this one."

"When Beauty Blender came out with their Beauty Blender, the beauty sponge, it changed the game. It changed the makeup game for everyone. People went wild for it. Professionals, non professionals, everyday consumers, everyday makeup wearers."

The DownFall Of Beauty Blender | have they become irrelevant?
"Beautyblender made such an impression on the beauty industry as a whole that Beauty Blender has become a blanket statement for all makeup sponges. The term 'beauty blender' didn't exist until Beauty Blender came out. Like Sellotape, Hoover, Chapstick, Biro. [...] Those are brand names, but you use them to describe everything. [...] Lately, things don't seem to be as revolutionary for Beauty Blender as they used to be. You don't really see much going on. In my opinion, there were a few slip ups along the way that maybe made them not the experts in something like they used to be. [...] They were the experts in makeup tools, and then they tried to go into other stuff and made themselves the least in certain categories. [...] Other brands have kind of stolen their shine a little bit with their own product."

"This is the time of year that you want to stock up on these. I use the Beauty Blenders not only to apply makeup but sometimes to apply really thick, rich ointment moisturizers like Aquaphor or Cerave Skin Food on my face. Always wet it, always wet it, and make sure to wash it consistently."
